Email Length

By: Anik Home | Internet-and-Business | Internet-Marketing

Email length, long or short? I am going to give you real quick overview of what I have seen. Here's the short answer, it doesn't help you at all. It just depends. I love that answer because it's works for everything. Maybe it does though. It all depends on you; it depends on your list, your relationship with your list and your niche It actually depends on you, your list, your relationship with your list and your niche Everything depends on you; it all depends on your list and your relationship with your list and your niche}. However, here's my real big advice that I can give you, mix it up.

Here's a funny story for you. In 2010, the MOST clicks I got from an email to my list had the following subject line: 'Anik declares bankruptcy..."

"Gee...thanks' I thought, you guys really do love me. PAIN = CURIOSITY = CLICKS!

Anyways, there's always a big debate about how to GET these clicks (when it comes to Email length).

If you are used to writing lots of long emails, write a short one sometimes. What I have seen is this. If you feel that the place that they are clicking to, because most of the emails should have a link which you want them to click. If you feel that the link is leading to a place where that page can stand on its own.

Meaning the sales message is so strong that you don't need to do a lot of pre-selling in the email, do a short email; you will have a high click through rate. It's just so very quick and easy and people get it. Long emails will definitely lead to a lesser click through rate, given some circumstances where it might still be considerably high if it is something they are expecting.

But if were to, 'all things being equal' just send out an email with no hype behind it, no expectations at the email coming, short or long, higher click through rates on the short one lesser click through rates on the long one with the warning that the revenue from the longer one may still be better than the short one. Why? It all actually depends on the page which they are landing.
The longer one you had a really bigger opportunity to pre-sell them to tell what they are about to see. To set expectation and to get them excited. On the shorter one you said 'click this link'. So the real answer is that it really depends on which page they are landing. That's what's going to make the difference whether your email should be short or long.

The other answer I can give you is if you are always sending short emails send a long one every now and then and vice versa. Because if you change it, your list will respond to it accordingly. Do a test for yourself. I know that when I have a really strong video that I know is going to sell well, I write short emails. Else I am aware that when I have a sales page and it is going to be a high price ticket and more expensive, I need to convince the person a bit more, so I do a long email. I am aware that I am going to get less click through rates but they will be more quality clicks. And that's the key.

I've been doing this for 6+ years and have sold over $32M (most of it thanks to Email) and this is my final verdict on the matter of 'email length'.
