Chelsea FC suffered a mild setback in its intentions to remain the leader of the English Premier League. Although it is still in first place, Chelsea closed the gap with Arsenal its closest pursuer. The Blues (28pts.) were just two points behind Arsenal (26pts.) after they lost 3-0, at home against Sunderland, at the meeting that took place last weekend for the thirteenth round of the English Premiere League. Chelsea began the 2010/2011 season defending its championship title. This was demonstrated in the first game, in which they crushed West Bromwich Albion by an overwhelming 6-0 score. Chelsea stayed with a run of consecutive wins until the fifth week, showing along the distinct games that were been played, that they where the most dominating team. These best wins by Chelsea included a 6-0 in the second match against Wigan Athletic and a 4-0 against Blackpool during the fifth day. During the sixth round, the English champions lost 1-0 in their visit to Manchester City. Then, at home, the team got back on its two feet with a 2-0 win against its longtime rival Arsenal. The following week, Chelsea endangered the top spot after their 0-0 draw with Aston Villa and Arsenal's 2-1 win over Birmingham. The Blues were back in track after two consecutive wins the following weeks. The first was 2-0 victory against Wolvwehampton and the second a 1-2 win over the Blackburn Rovers. For week eleven the team ended with a 2-0 against Liverpool. Chelsea would achieve its seventh straight win at home with a score of 1-0 against Fulham. For their part, Sunderland is a team that finished last season in thirteenth place and is currently in sixth place in the English Premier League. During this season the Black Cats have climbed some positions despite what could be considered a performance filled with highs and lows. Sunderland so far has recorded seven draws, four wins and two defeats for a fairly good season. For the match at Stamford Bridge, Sunderland seemed as if it would not offer much resistance and the home team would add one more without much of a hassle. But was Chelsea wrong about this one. Chelsea was the favorite from the start of the game but its superior rival did not intimidate Sunderland. The visitors began to move freely as the game evolved on and were quickly approaching the opposing goal. Chelsea seemed to be on a bad day and the coach had very little control over the offensive line. Sunderland began its way into an historic upset in the last minute of the first half of the match. The defender Nedum Onuoha opened the score with a great goal. Chelsea even got out and tried desperately to find the equalizer before the break, but its attempts were fruitless. For the second half of the match, Sunderland continued to attack and Gyan Asamoah made it 2-0 after 52 minutes. With a few minutes remaining, Danny Wellbeck closed the match with a 3-0 for an epic upset. The absence of the injured John Terry and Frank Lampard was felt in Chelsea’s under par performance. The team has now lost its chance to meet and surpass its record of ten consecutive wins at home.
