Enjoy Fishing Or A Catamaran Cruise In Cancun

By: Chris Robertson Home | Travel-and-Leisure

Whether you've been fishing all your life or you've never held a rod before, a deep-sea fishing charter in the waters off Cancun is an experience to remember. The waters are crystal blue, deep and endless, and the fish are plentiful. You may catch mahi mahi (also called dolphin), bonita, marlin, shark, amberjacks, sailfish, or many other species. Offshore fishing is best from January through June.

Deeply tanned and muscular deckhands skillfully bait your hooks. You never have to touch the hook or the bait. When you have a fish on your line, a deckhand comes over and cheers you on and helps you haul it in (if you want help). The deckhand takes the fish off the hook and re-baits your line. Your fish is marked as yours and goes into a tank for you to claim when the trip is over.

But fishing isn't the only adventure awaiting you in Cancun. You can charter a yacht or catamaran for any occasion, or no occasion at all. Weddings, honeymoons, bachelor parties, family reunions, business trips - any event is more festive when you're on the Mexican Caribbean. You can plan an intimate yacht trip for two or a gala for 200. A 100-foot long catamaran can host dinner and dancing for up to 300 people. Now that's a party!

Fishing and relaxing are just two of dozens of activities you can enjoy while you're in Cancun. Take your party snorkeling or scuba diving. Swim with the dolphins or go snorkeling and discover whale sharks the largest fish in the sea. You can enjoy a few hours or a few days exploring the beaches, caverns, and hideaways surrounding Cancun.

If you don't want to charter a private boat, you can join a shared trip to go sailing or snorkeling around Isla Mujeres. Or bring a date on a dinner cruise, and dine to sweet music on the gentle waters.

Isla Mujeres, in case you don't know, is a small but beautiful island near Cancun off the Yucatan Peninsula. The name means "Island of Women." Only five miles long and half a mile wide, the colorful town has terrific restaurants and shops and gorgeous white sand beaches. It's a quiet town, quite different from the noise and fast life of Cancun. Fishermen still make their livings from the island waters. If you're not on a charter or party boat, a 25-minute ferry ride will take you to Isla Mujeres. Many people make a day trip from Cancun, although there are lovely beachfront hotels if you want to stay a while. Even though Isla Mujeres is a popular vacation spot, it hasn't lost its quaint charm.

If you're planning a trip to Cancun, come anytime. The weather stays a perfect 80 degrees year round, except for July and August, which are a little hotter. October and November are the wet months; in other months all you'll get is an occasional short tropical shower. And don't worry about having the right kind of money - most businesses in Cancun will take pesos and U.S. dollars.
