Everything changes about your body as the development of your tiny fetus is taking place. Here are several ways to ensure the health of your child and yourself including what you need to know about pregnancy nutrition.

Many women have been fed the information that just because they are pregnant, they are eating for two. This is true, but only to a certain extent; the right amount of foods to eat when pregnant does not mean that you should eat enough calories for two adults. For the first few months of life, the baby is actually feeding off of your body and it gets all of its nutrients in a very direct manner. So, eating enough food for two is basically a pregnancy nutrition myth, at least during these first few months.

You just need to ensure that you have adequate amounts of the nutrients that are necessary for the health of you and your baby. Whatever you eat during this time is known as replacement food. The nutritional components will be utilized by your baby's system.

This is the reason you need to really concentrate on including the best choices of foods to eat when pregnant. You should select plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy proteins to eat. These are all necessary for the proper development of your baby.

These building blocks help to form all the vital organs from the brain to your baby's heart. Food cravings are very common during pregnancy and this happens for a good reason. Many doctors believe that your body knows what nutrients it needs a long time before you could even recognize the fact.

If you are craving steak, the reason you want this food is probably because your body has determined that it needs the protein. Your body is alerting you to this fact so that you can provide it with the essential nutrition to further the development of your baby.

Make sure to avoid or limit your intake of caffeinated drinks like sodas and coffee while you are pregnant. Caffeine is an appetite suppressor and has no nutritional value. Drinking large amounts of water and fruit juices is vital as well. Water helps to flush your system and rid your body of toxins.

The correct foods to eat when pregnant should include the essentila element calcium for strong bones and good health. You can make sure you are getting enough calcium by choosing more dairy products. Try selecting pasteurised cheeses, yogurt and skimmed or low fat milk products.

Protein is important to an expectant mother. You can add more protein by eating lean red meats, chicken, fish and turkey. Other protein rich foods include lentils and beans.

Foods to eat when pregnant has to include the nutrient known as folic acid. This nutrient is a must for pregnant women, especially in that first critical trimester. You can make sure you get enough folic acid when you take pre-natal vitamins and also add foods to your diet that contain lots of this essential element. Choose dark leafy green veggies, and natural whole grain products. If you use these tips about healthy, sensible pregnancy nutrition it will help you give your baby the best possible start in life.
