As more and more businesses and individuals race to brand themselves online, it’s important to remember that the idea is not to sprint from the starting line if you don’t know where you are going. The idea is to run the race that’s right for you and your business. Build your brand, create brand loyalty, establish your Internet Identity in everything you do: slowly and methodically establish an online brand that is synonymous with dependability and consistency Establishing consistency is easy. One way is to use the same photo for all of your social media accounts and have a slogan that you use with that photo. Just think of the Ford logo and the slogan Build Ford Tough. Easy, yes? All you need is a nice head shot and something catchy, like….Sally Kicks Butt. Use these two tools – consistently – on all media sites. Same photo. Same slogan. (By the way, did you read that 78% of Twitter users follow someone with a nice smile in their profile photo? Try it - it works!) Got that done? Good. Next thing you need is a couple of foundation messages. What do you want people to know about you and your business? What do you have to offer them? Figure out two or three foundation messages about your business and use them in your posts. It could be: 1. We’re marketing experts who love to help people 2. We can teach you how to use video to explode your online branding Write and playwright Clare Boothe Luce told President John F. Kennedy that a successful president is a one-phrase person. “He freed the slaves” or “he took the country out of war.” What is that one sentence for you? The important thing is to have these tools - the photo, the slogan, and the messages - all ready BEFORE you go online. Have a few articles ready to post on your blog or website. Take time to lay a good foundation before you begin the race. Let the rabbit take off as fast as he wants - he’ll tire of it quickly. You play it smart. Each time you post something, make sure your article or tweet or video enforces the foundation messages. Drive that message home and back it up with - you guessed it - your photo and slogan. That way, when people search for information on you, they’ll see these messages repeated and come to associate those messages with your brand. Building brand consistently is so important. Using the Law of Repetition to its best advantage is running a smart race. Using the same photo and slogan and combining them with foundation messages - consistently using them to represent your brand - will really burn your message into people’s brains. This is where the power of social media really comes into play. Use the power of emerging technologies to grab the internet by the hair and ride it all the way to the finish line. The only limitation you have is your own imagination. Remember – it doesn’t matter who gets to the online finish line first…LIFE is the finish line and there are a lot of other races to run. The hare may get there first this time, but the tortoise has thought out the race and competed in a way that sets her up for the next race, and the one after that. The rabbit is spent and just wants to hit the pub for a gin and juice.
