Everything You Need To Know About Eyelid Surgery

By: Dr. Louis William Apostolakis Home | Health-and-Fitness

Eyelid surgery is a great procedure to make you look and feel years younger. It is a relatively simple procedure that can rejuvenate your appearance. Read on to find out what to discuss with your surgeon prior to the surgery, the possible outcomes, and post surgery precautions.

Eyes can develop creases for several reasons †heredity, facial structure, ultraviolet rays and normal aging. Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty) involves the removal of excess skin and bags, resulting in a decrease in the signs of aging around the eyes. This procedure has evolved significantly in the last couple of decades and now, skilled surgeons can do the procedure more accurately with less negative effects.

The Consult

The Blepharoplasty procedure will occur after consultation with your surgeon, who will inquire about your general medical history and any previous eyelid surgery. A thyroid or kidney disease can cause swelling of the eyelids, so it is important for your surgeon to know all medical history. The surgeon will examine your eyelids and face symmetry, and discuss the results you can expect from the surgery. If you would like to see something specific as an end result, this will be the time to discuss it with your surgeon. You need to have a detailed chat with your surgeon on what can be done on your eyelids. The surgeon will discuss likely outcomes, risks, recovery and costs with you, so that you can make an informed decision.

The Surgery

The surgery is performed with local anesthesia with the patient sedated. An incision is made on the upper eyelid, and excess skin is trimmed and deeper tissues are contoured as necessary. Subsequently, the lid is sutured using continuous stitch. The lower eyelids can be done a number of ways, usually not involving any incisions in the skin.

Post Surgery

Expect your stitches to be removed three to seven days after the procedure. Scars will be pink for a few weeks, but will flatten with time. A gentle massage starting a couple of weeks after the surgery can help in flattening. Though healing should be pretty straightforward, you'll have to take several precautions:

â€You can gently splash the eyelids with water but never rub.
â€Apply ointment to the incision as directed for a few days.
â€Do not use any eye make until directed, usually 1 week.
â€You'll not be able to use contact lenses for some time. Be sure you have glasses available prior to surgery.
â€For any discomfort around the eyelids, use only the medications recommended by your surgeon.

Risk Factor

Eyelid surgery is generally very safe. As for the risks, bleeding and infection is possible for every surgery. However, for Blepharoplasty, these risks are relatively rare. If you do face medical problems, these can be taken care of by your surgeon through medication.

The number of people opting for eyelid surgery has only increased in the United States in recent years. The procedure is available at cosmetic surgery facilities across the country. Texas in particular has seen a phenomenal increase in the number of medical facilities offering Blepharoplasty Austin hosts several clinics offering eyelid surgery and various other plastic surgery procedures.
