Experience The Thrill And Adventure Of Ladakh

By: Subhash Kandpal Home | Travel-and-Leisure

Ladakh is a perfect holiday destination, at the same time it offers a wide range of adventure expedition to the tourists visiting India. Generally, people visiting here look forward to some fun filled activities and also want to enjoy the beauty of the serene nature of the cold desert, famous for its colourful fairs and festivals. So if you are one of those who like trekking, rafting, biking, mountaineering or camping then pack your bags with enough warm clothes, a medical kit, lots of dehydrating liquid and off course do not forget those sun glasses and moisturising lotions.

Being situated in a remote place in northern India, Ladakh falls within altitude ranging between 2,750 meters to 25,170 meters. Here maximum daytime temperature during summers is 27 degree Centigrade and minus 20 degree Centigrade in winters. What else can a travel enthusiast visiting here ask for? It certainly gives a satisfying experience to a nature lover.

Majority of the tourists come here for trekking but getting acclimatized to the climatic condition first, in this high altitude region becomes very essential for the first timers as well as the regulars. So do spend some time visiting the monasteries in the region of Leh to slowly allow your body to adapt to the change.

Being situated in the mighty Himalan range Ladakh offers some of the highest mountain passes in the world to the trekkers. The major trekking routes of Ladakh are Kargil Region, Ladakh-Zanskar Trekking, Indus Valley Trek and Tso Moriri Lake Trekking. The trekking season is ideally between August to early September though if you want to have the most unique trekking experience then Chadar trek in Ladakh could be the ideal option. The best time to enjoy Chaddar trek could be between January and Mid-March. Trekking is just one of a kind adventure sport that every fun-loving traveler would love but it is most essential to be physically fit and strong before undertaking these treks.

Adding to all these, if you are looking for more adventure then river rafting in Ladakh is something you should definitely give a try and better not ignore it. This place is an ultimate spot for river rafting. Here most of the rivers and its tributaries are known for gentle floating, as well as for the thrilling white water rafting. Some of the major river rafting routes in Ladakh is Phey to Nimo, Nimo to Alchi, Upshi to Kharu, Phey to Saspol, Kharu to Spituk, Saspol to Khaltsey, and Hemis to Choglamsar Bridge.

In winters tourists trek on the frozen river from Nimo to Karsha but, it should be kept in mind that this water sport require special skill and the rafter need to be expert before trying hands in this adventure. A highly secure arrangement for rescue coverage is an important pre- requisite before embarking upon a white-water expedition on a river.

When it comes to biking- be it motor bike or simple sports bike, Ladakh proves to be an unbeatable destination. Biking can be done usually in the months of October-December and late June/July to August. It generally involves a 12 to 13-day bike ride, which takes you to the steep hills, astounding glaciers and snow-capped Himalayan ranges.

Rohtang pass, Lahaul valley, Keylong, Darcha, Tanglang La (world's second highest Pass), Lachung La, Baralach La and Khardung La, are all popular routes travelled by bikers in Ladakh. Another famous route frequently travelled is the 520 km long Manali-Leh route also known as the Army Road. The challenging ride begins with the climb to Baralcha after the Manali-Leh route as the altitude increases. The toughest part of the ride is the climb to Lachung La. Continuing for a couple of days you will reach your destination, Leh. Do not forget to visit the Thiksey and Shey Monasteries just before Leh. Basic bike repairing equipments like tire levers, pump, patch tubes, chain tool, crescent wrench, duct tape, cables, brake pads, crank remover and spare spokes are most likely to come handy while on a long ride.

Though new, today tourism in Ladakh is gaining popularity among visitors from across the world. So, this season you must travel to this Himalayan region of India as it often surpasses the best in the world.
