Facts About Anorexia Symptoms

By: Ashlyn Baul Home | Health-and-Fitness

Anorexia is a condition where people have an irrational fear of being overweight and they obsess about the food they eat and how much they weigh. Someone with anorexia exercises excessively or eats very little in an effort to maintain a weight that is far below the normal range.

Anorexia is an eating disorder where people, especially the teen group (adolescent girls) starve themselves - the main reason is to lose weight and turn lean. Anorexia usually begins in young people around the onset of puberty. Weight loss is obtained by many ways - some harmful also. The common techniques used are excessive exercise, intake of laxatives/ diet pills, vomiting after a meal and starving oneself to limitless extent.

Anorexia is typically identified during mid to late adolescence, which is a critical period for bone development. Up to one third of peak bone density is achieved during puberty. This is the time when we fill up our bone banks- from which we will make withdrawals later in life. The degree of bone loss seen with anorexia is unique in its severity and anorexia symptoms of bone loss can be detected after only 6 months of illness.

If you trust nothing else you hear about Anorexia, trust this; what you see when you look at your dieter is not what they see in the mirror. They see a person they can't stand to look at when they look in the mirror. That in itself is an anorexia symptom and one that is easy to pin down. If you suspect someone of suffering this disorder confront them on what they see in the mirror. If all they see is something ugly, you need to get them help.

Another peculiar eating habit that is an anorexia symptom is that the person will often cut their food into tiny bite size pieces. It also involves eating one piece at a time. A sufferer of this condition could also experience periods of binge eating because they are in fact so hungry. You may notice the person is constantly weighing himself or herself before and after eating. Even though they may not be eating, they could be talking about food all the time.

Anorexia nervosa symptoms can be easily detected since the symptoms are observable habits rigorously practiced by those afflicted with this disorder. First thing that would be observed is that the person thinks that he/she is too fat despite a thin appearance. Because of a twisted perception if one's body image, the person may even embark on an exercise program that can lead to more weight loss.

The physical symptoms include constipation and abdominal pain, irregular menstrual cycles, anemia, and uncommonly low heart rate. Yet, noticeable physical symptoms are brittle nails, dry, flaky skin, loss of hair on the head, but increase of hair growth in other areas, in addition to tooth loss.

Women and girls who suffer from anorexia experience hormonal imbalances. Due to the lack of vital nutrients, their bodies produce less estrogen than usual, causing irregular menstruation. Sometimes menstrual periods even stop completely in the case of female anorexics that indulge in abstinence from food. Anorexia also affects the fertility of women and girls, reducing their chances of remaining pregnant.
