Facts About Asbestos And Malignant Mesothelioma.

By: dsmythe Home | Health-and-Fitness

October 29, 2009

Mesothelioma is a particularly destructive cancer, for decades can pass between exposure to the asbestos and appearance of cancerous symptoms. It is not uncommon for this type of cancer to take 20 to 30 years or more to show symptoms.

Further complicating mesothelioma treatment is the malignant nature of the cancer, for once symptoms surface, current therapeutic treatments are usually no longer effective and post-diagnosis survival rates typically range from four months to a year.

Cancer can attack any system or organ in the body, and very often shows few external symptoms until it is too late.

Another lethal aspect of cancer derives from the nature of cancerous cells to spread to healthy surrounding tissues by means of the circulatory or lymphatic systems.

This combination of factors has made cancers like mesothelioma the single greatest threat to health around the globe.

Asbestos fibers have been linked to the development of mesothelioma, and it appears that this is only known source for this terrible disease.

Asbestos fibers once airborne can contaminate the surrounding area. This is why anytime a building is torn down a check for asbestos is made before demolition.

If asbestos is present in the building federal and state guidelines for safe removal have to be followed. This is not always the case as some contractors may circumvent the lengthy and costly federal guidelines.

This was found to be the case in Southern Louisiana after the Katrina hurricane decimated the area. Some unscrupulous workers were taking asbestos contaminated debris and simply loading it into an open dump truck, without any cover or care to prevent the fibers from becoming airborne. This was done countless times in the Louisiana area, and as of this writing it is unknown how many people may have been exposed due to this careless removal.

Other areas that may be prone to asbestos contamination or airborne particles include shipyards, refineries, car manufacturing plants, and other heavy industries that use asbestos in different products and applications.
