Fad And Celebrity Diets Are These Now A Good Thing?

By: Chris Northover Home | Health-and-Fitness

Are we really living in a society that says FAD and Celebrity dieting is a Good thing? Or as many nutrition experts tell us is Dieting a poor substitute for healthy eating?

Many Nutritionists would argue a good diet consists of dividing your plate into a quarter protein a quarter carbohydrate (preferably complex carbs) and a half vegetables. This would then be a sustainable diet for life. If we would only then stick to two of these plates per day (as it is said that we over eat by one third in the Western World) also one to three portions of fruit a day and then we would pretty much be maintaining a perfect diet! There you have it, no complex recipes no rigid menus just sensible eating and Bingo are we SMUG !

Lets be real for a minute, the above assumes that you don't go to work and you don't go out at night and eat in restaurants and you don't get take outs and you don't snack and you don't eat cakes cream sugar and the other 10 dozen other temptations we are all faced with every day. It also assumes that we are at the right weight and body mass to start with and can take the time to plan our meals so that everything is perfect. Healthy eating is a great concept but the reality is that many of us will never get there. The reality is that most of us are over weight carry excess fat perhaps have dangerously high Cholesterol and are walking health time bombs waiting to go off. I do not say this to depress you but in order to be real about where the majority of us with our busy stressful lives are coming from. Yes a Healthy Perfect diet with our own Chef and Fitness coach or personal trainer would be great but for the average person this is Not Realistic.

How do people in the modern world cope with increasing scientific evidence that our normal daily lives with our regular food and drink choices are actually bad for us and by increasing our body mass weight and body fat to unsustainable unhealthy levels places us at higher than normal risks of health problems. Not only are we at risk from physiological problems but we are increasingly at risk from psychological problems. The media is constantly bombarding us with images of healthy muscular perfectly proprtioned often size zero washboard stomachs and ripped six packs of athletic successful people. Every time we see one of these images we automatically compare ourselves conciously and subconciously and we are constantly getting the message that we do not measure up!

In order to fill the gap between Reality and Perfection a huge market has opened up. This market has been characterised by some as FAD dieting and is often marketed with Celebrity endorsement. I have been an avid student of dieting methods and so called Fad dieting for the last few years after I was diagnosed with high BMI and high cholesterol. My friends all live the busy life and some try to eat sensibly and some don't. Of those that do many fail and they too are overweight. One of my friends Carly is the typical Yo Yo dieter as she eats normally (for her) puts on weight and then goes into starvation mode in disgust and her weight drops back down but then she starts eating again and balloons back up to where she was before she started! Another friend does all the normal diets and then reaches plateau at a certain weight and then can't go any lower however much she struggles not to eat! Sound familiar? I was a sceptic of Fad dieting until it hit me like a ton of bricks. My girlfriends are all not succeeding with the usual responses to weight loss. They are also failing at Healthy eating lifestyles which for them is just not realistic. So when a so called FAD diet comes along saying hey lose 14 pounds in one week I can see why you would be tempted!

Now the real question is that Fad diets would be a good thing if they were not bad for you and this is where the centre of the debate really lays. Who says FAD diets are bad? If a diet kick starts us into a better shape and lower weight and we start to feel better about ourselves and this encourages us into better eating habits long term then surely this is a Good Thing. If my friend Rose wants to lose 15 pounds in two weeks before she gets married and does the Wedding Day diet so she can wear a gorgeous dress, be admired and feel great then surely this is a good thing! If Mary lou has reached a plateau and cannot seem to lose the dreaded belly fat after trying everything going and then does the Ripped Abs program and drops several dress sizes and transforms herself into a babe all in a few months, that all the guys are going crazy for when before no one would ever look at her. Well I know which way I would jump! My friend Maria tried the Negative Calorie Diet after doing the Master Cleanse Detox diet and says she is trimmer and fitter more confident and relaxed than she has ever been before and what she has learnt from these diet programs means that there will be no going back to where she was before. I do not call this FAD dieting I call it a gift from God.
