Far Infrared Sauna What Is It?

By: Jake Plumer Home | Health-and-Fitness

You all know what a sauna is but have you heard about the infrared or far infrared sauna? Infrared technology has been adapted to he sauna this type of heat has many advantages over the common sauna. These increased benefits include reduced energy consumption, quicker start up times and some claim an increase in health benefits such as detoxification, stress and weight control. Many of these health claims have not been substantiated in a clinical environment always contact your doctor with any sauna health questions especially if there is a history of Adrenal suppression, SLE and multiple sclerosis.

Far infrared sauna heaters use infrared waves in the 5.6 to 1000 microns in the electromagnetic spectrum these waves fall in the band of invisible infrared waves. The infrared waves are not the same as the UV waves from the sun that cause sunburn. The infrared waves heat an object without heating up the air in between the object and the infrared source. This in turn allows the sauna user to begin feeling the heat right away this reduces the warm up time associated with the common sauna by not heating the surrounding air and sauna room the amount of energy used is greatly diminished.

Many claims have been made that using a far infrared sauna has greater health benefits then using a conventional sauna. The wave frequencies in an infrared sauna are said to cause the cells in your body to release fat soluble toxins, heavy metals and drugs to be released into the bloodstream or through the pores of the skin. The increased body temperature is said to act like a fever, a fever causes the body to increase the production of blood cells and T cells that enhance the immune system. Although controversial weight control is also said to be benefit of a far infrared sauna the amount of weight lost by perspiration will quickly be regained however it is claimed that one sauna session can burn off up to 600 calories. Combine this with the fact that subcutaneous fat is released with the perspiration and other toxins.

The claimed benefits of a far infrared sauna over a conventionally heated sauna include an increase in safety as there are no hot surfaces; they are much more transportable, are some 80 % more energy efficient and they induces a higher amount of perspiration. Other benefits include a lower overall operating temperature, infrared does not dry you out like a conventional sauna also a far infrared sauna does not require any water to operate this reduces the chance for bacteria to grow and lowers the amount of clean up time required. Many infrared user claim that the infrared sauna is more comfortable and easier to use that a conventionally heated sauna.

Many of the claims above have not been evaluated in a clinical environment, many more test need to be done with IR heat to determine if is in fact better that other forms of heat such as hot water bottles or packs, hot wax or even microwaves. The bottom line is a far infrared sauna will if used properly reduce your stress levels and give the bather some relaxing quite time to unwind and rejuvenate themselves.
