We have often heard a family member refer to diabetes and wondered what it was. Diabetes is a disease that develops when the amount of glucose, or more simply blood sugar, rise due to the lack of insulin in our body. Keeping Diabetes in control involves keeping blood sugar levels in control. Diabetes has some short-term effects and if not controlled in time, might end up in deadly diseases which prove to be fatal for life. Short-time effects include blurred eye-vision, loss in weight, loss in concentration, frequent urination etc. and if these short-term effects are not controlled in time, it ultimately ends up in hazardous consequences like kidney failure, heart diseases, eye diseases etc. The age, lifestyle of a person and stage of the disease are three factors upon which the treatment of diabetes depends. In the beginning stages of treatment of diabetes, a healthy and nutritious diet and regular exercise are a must. In order to understate diabetes, the weight of the diabetic should first and foremost be brought in control. Or otherwise, oral medications and insulin can also be given if these steps to control diabetes are not effective. More than 15 million Americans are suffering from diabetes and most of them are dependent on daily insulin shots. The key to control diabetes is to lower blood pressure and blood glucose levels and high cholesterol levels. Smoking triggers heart diseases and even greatly increases the risk for heart disease in diabetic people. Therefore diabetic people are advised to quit smoking in order to control the deadly heart diseases and high cholesterol levels. Herbs such as gymnema, bitter melon, bilberry, and birch leaf tea are sometimes used to help control diabetes. Gymnema increases insulin secretion by the pancreas and lowers insulin resistance, thereby lowering blood sugar levels. Bitter melon, a fruit, helps aid in the production of insulin by increasing the number of beta cells in the pancreas. Bilberry helps with eyesight and blood vessels because it contains tannins and compounds called OPCs. Birch leaf tea helps with weight loss, which is important in helping to control diabetes. Major drugs given in Diabetes include Insulin and Oral Hypoglycemics. Nutritious diet which is to be given to Diabetics should be rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B6, Fatty Acids, Alpha Lipoic acid, Chromium, Vanadium, Zinc etc. Vitamin A is an important element for treatment of Diabetes. It prevents side-effects of Diabetes like eye diseases, kidney problems etc. Vitamin D and Zinc help in Insulin production. Vanadium helps move insulin into the cells and Chromium helps in carbohydrate metabolism. Alpha Lipoic acid helps in converting glucose into energy required for the body. All these minerals and Vitamins are found in healthy diet like cod liver oil, nutritional yeast, animal foods including raw butter, cream, cheese, raw meat and fish, beef and lamb, seafood like shellfish, unrefined salt for trace minerals, bone broths for minerals; unfiltered olive oil; molasses, egg yolks; and a variety of fresh and fermented vegetables. The blood sugar level in body is measured by hemoglobinA1C which should be 7 percent or below. At New York City public hospitals, around 50,000 diabetic patients are being treated and they say that lower blood sugar alone does not help controlling the disease. They are using an electronic patient registry, also keep track of blood pressure, cholesterol levels, as well as eye and foot exams. According to them, Doctors should always treat patients by lowering blood sugar levels i.e. protein HaemoglobinA1C levels unless and until the factors such as age, other chronic conditions, lifestyle and culture are not being controlled.
