Find Cheap Car Insurance For Teenagers

By: Ron Stephens Home | Automotive

One of the first things to do before you purchase cheap car insurance for teenagers is to determine what type of coverage you will need for your young driver, and how much you are willing to spend.

In some states, all drivers are required to carry Personal Injury Protection, but in other states it is only mandatory to carry liability coverage. No matter where you live you need to get some of these types of questions answered before you purchase the policy.

Here are some of the more important questions to answer before insuring your teenage driver:

Learn why car insurance rates are so expensive for younger drivers.

Insurance rates will vary for different teen drivers based on the average accident rate for their gender and age. For example, young male drivers on average have more accidents and are more prone to get traffic violations than girls the same age.

Also taken into consideration is whether or not the male driver is married or single. In general rates will be higher for young single males than it will be for young single females. But teenagers in general, male or female, will pay more for insurance than older drivers.

Is it possible to be added to the parents auto policy?

You can usually save quite a bit of money if your teenage driver is going to be added to your family policy and drive only the family car. But if they are going to have their own car, they will most likely pay more for insurance.

Does age matter when taking out a new policy for my teenager? Probably no, this is as long as you have a valid drivers license. However, in some of the states you should be above 18 years to own a car and the drivers license in order to get the car insurance for teenagers.

Is the rate affected if during accidents or if a traffic violence ticket is issued?

If you are not at fault in an accident than your insurance rates will probably not be affected. But if you are found at fault than there is a good chance that your rates will increase when you renew your policy. Drivers who are at fault in an accident are considered a higher risk to the insurance company and until you drive for several more years with no accidents, you can expect to pay higher premiums for a while.

If I loan my vehicle to a friend and they get into an accident are they covered?

Most of the time, if a person using your car with your permission will be covered by your auto insurance policy. But if they do have an accident, the insurance company may raise your rates as if you were driving the car yourself. They may even limit the coverage if the driver was borrowing your car, so beware and don't just loan your car to anyone that you are not sure is a responsible driver.

Should you report all accidents no matter how minor they are, to my insurance company?

It is very important to notify your insurance company of any accident that involves your car and someone else's car or property. If for some reason the other party decides to sue for damages, your insurance company may not cover the accident if you did not report it from the beginning. In a case like this they may not be able to defend you because it was not reported.

Definitely yes, it is important to let the company know about all your accidents although you might not end up in filing a claim for coverage. However, if you do not report these incidents then you might even have the risk of being sued by the opposing party and your insurance company might even not be able to defend strongly on your side.
