Flights To Dhaka

By: seanm Home | Travel-and-Leisure | Vacation

Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh, and considered as one of the major cities on South Asia. It is located on the banks of Buriganga River, and has a vast population of over 12 million. The city is called the "city of mosques". Dhaka is also known as the producer of the finest "muslin" in the world, which is a kind of cotton fabric that is finely woven, used to make dresses, curtains and other clothing materials.

Trip to Dhaka was famous from time immemorial for its fine muslin. Now, pink pearls and its rich variety of traditional handicrafts take pride of place. Shoppers will also find gold and silver products at amazingly low prices. New Market, Elephant Road and Dhanmondi are the best areas for shopping.

Bangladesh has its fair share of historic buildings to explore. One building that dates back to the time that the British controlled the land is Curzon Hall. Old High Court is another popular architectural and historic landmark in the country, and it is considered an excellent example of the architecture of the European Renaissance.

Of course, Bangladesh is known for its beaches, and at the southernmost point of the country you can find Kuakata, a new beachside resort. This resort is located near the Rakhane tribes, so it is a great choice for those who want to see what the traditional culture of Bangladesh is like. It is also a great location to view both the sunset and sunrise.

Tara Masjid (Star Mosque) - one of the most unusual mosques in Dhaka, which also called the "city of mosques". The name, "Star" was given to the mosque due to the sparkling mosaic of broken china. The mosque was said to have been built way back in the 17th century by Shaista Khan. Infront of the mosque, is a star shaped figure, which stands for the mosque's name.
