Food Allergies are one of the most common types of allergy people suffer from. Virtually every food that can be eaten causes an allergic reaction to someone somewhere in the world but the three that are believed to be the most common of them all are dairy, peanuts and shellfish. Although death from an allergic reaction is very rare, it does happen occasionally. If a person has known Food Allergies, they or their caregiver should always carry an epipen or other form of epinephrine with them. Consult a doctor to see if he recommends carrying antihistamines along in case there ever is a possible exposure to the allergen. People who are allergic to dairy products are usually allergic to either the whey or casein in it, but some people are also intolerant to the lactose sugar milk has in it. There are several symptoms of an allergy to one of the parts in milk including diarrhea, bloating and stomach cramps. Food labeling has become very thorough in the last several years so someone with this allergy should be vigilant about reading these new labels because dairy can be found in surprising places like cans of tuna and many food flavorings and spice blends. Shellfish is another of the most common Food Allergies, and every one's allergy to shellfish is different. One person may be allergic to only one type of shellfish while another person may not be able to have any shellfish at all, or any products containing traces of it. Shellfish reactions vary amongst people with allergies and some of the symptoms are hives, a swelling tongue or tingling in the mouth, diarrhea and nausea and/or dizziness or fainting. Peanuts have become such a problematic food allergy that many schools have even made a rule that peanuts are banned from campus. Even children without peanut allergies are not allowed to bring peanut butter in their own lunches to be sure that they do not share their PBJs with kids who are allergic. There is some question in medical circles about whether these affected people are allergic to the peanut itself or to the mold which grows on the shell before it is harvested and also while it is in storage.
