Fountains have played a part in outdoor gardens and town squares for many hundreds of years and even longer. The majority of these fountains were made from natural stones like granite and marble. Historically fountains can be found in ancient Middle Eastern, Egyptian, and Roman cultures. In the Middle Eastern history, more precisely that found in ancient Persia, fountains were used in gardens to create an oasis atmosphere that might represent features found in heaven. They were often just ponds lined with trees. These trees and water features would give a respite from the sometimes blazing hot sun and unbearable heat. They were made from stone because it was the best and most accessible natural product for the job. The ancient Roman culture centered much of the daily routine around their bathing rituals, so it was only natural that fountains played a part as common features in their public and private bath houses. They added a relaxing sound as water would trickle down or splash into the pools of water. The fountains also served the specific purpose of simply proving a source of water for those who lived nearby. Fountains were a common meeting place in those days. People would come bearing their stone, clay, or ceramic jugs and while they filled their containers with the flowing water they could converse with one another as well. It was considered a social meeting ground much the same as the Roman baths were. Some of the most famous fountains in the world can be found in Rome and other areas of Italy. Many of these fountains were made of marble, travertine, and other natural stones. In many of these, natural stone elements were combined with statues or other fountain elements made of metals like bronze. These fountains are many times elaborately carved with designs of people and animals. Many mythological gods were represented in these fountains as well. Today fountains can be found in average homes where the owner wants to lend a touch of glamour to there sometimes small garden spaces. Of course, the homes of the wealthy can display some very beautiful and elaborate fountains that reproduce the looks of those wonderful fountain creations of the 1500 and 1600 hundreds. Fountains can also be found inside homes too. Many people love to hear the sound that water makes and the peaceful atmosphere it provides. Mini portable fountains are very popular now and can be placed on tables or other surfaces. They can be put in any room of the home to give the natural sound of flowing water.
