Free The Space In Your Commercial Kitchen With Storage Racks

By: Dominic Donaldson Home | Business

When designing a commercial kitchen, space is almost always an issue. Health, safety and hygiene are the core concerns in any business venture that involves food preparation. This article deals with the main considerations of planning a commercial kitchen and discusses techniques of storage such as storage racks and additional kitchen fabrication.

The most important part of kitchen design is planning and it is important before any storage racks are considered that the basics are taken care of. By this I mean that you have considered what appliances you will need that will need a direct water or electricity supply, or need plumbing, or need to be cleaned regularly and so on. Asking these simple questions can save the time and expense of plumber and electrician bills.

The financial business plan should be reflected in the kitchen plan. The number of covers you need to be hitting at your busiest times needs to be considered all the way through from the purchase of appliances to the fabrications floor plan. There needs to be enough space in the kitchen to dedicate separate areas to certain foods, such as meat, fish and vegetables. Failure to comply with these kinds of hygienic requirements can incur severe penalties including kitchen closure.

If you have projected 50 covers at peak times then you will need to be able to prepare that amount of food in a hygienic manner, meaning that sufficient surface space is required. Possible solutions during the planning stages can be to add in additional food preparation surfaces in the form of fabrication this can be done by moving storage space onto the walls with microwave shelves and storage racks.

Storage racks deliver a safe way of keeping ambient food and kitchen equipment that is not in constant use. There are certain health and safety principles that need to followed at all times when using storage racks. Heavy items should always be located at the bottom of any storage rack and there should be step ladders available for anything that needs to be lifted down from the higher areas of storage; like many health and safety issues these are matters of common sense.

Storage racks can offer a space liberating solution so that you can add as many fabricated surfaces as you require to prepare food within hygiene guidelines. They are generally priced around the 100 to 150GBP mark dependent on their surface area. Selecting which storage rack is beneficial for you is a matter of looking at your kitchen floor plan and doing the calculations. Storage racks are especially useful for storing trays of prepared food that would otherwise take up valuable preparation space.

Buffet trays can be prepared, wrapped then stored on levels until service is required however it is essential to remember that this is only ambient storage and certain buffet dishes are required to be refrigerated. Many storage racks can be dissembled easily meaning that if your requirements change then they can be stored away and that space freed.
