What does seo do for your blog or web site? Well seo stands for search engine optimization and that is the art of getting your site or blog to rank for whatever keywords you need to rank for. It's a very simple concept for sure. People search for things in google (and other search engines too but google is the main piece of the pie here) and typically browse the results on the first page. If your site is one of the ten listed on the first page of the results then you will receive traffic. Hopefully you will be able to convert that traffic into sales and money. That's the idea. Some people try to get around the hard word and effort involved in getting their sites to rank organically and pay google to show an ad which links to their site whenever a certain keyword is searched for. That is called pay per click or ppc for short. You must pay google for every time your ad gets clicked. How much do you need to pay? That all depends on how competitive your keyword is. Some may pay up to $50 per click! But generally speaking most people pay between .30 and $5 per click. That can surely add up! Of course if you are converting that traffic it may well be worth it. For instance, if you are a DUI lawyer you may have no problem at all paying $5 per click because each customer you convert could mean thousands of dollars in your pocket. So it all depends on what kind of service or goods you offer and how much you'll convert and make. But pay per click is not so easy. There is a learning curve involved in every ppc campaign and it's quite risky. That's why most people prefer organic search engine optimization. It's better to optimize your site and do what needs to be done in order to rank naturally. That is to say with out paying google for the clicks. You get the clicks and traffic for free. If you have a search engine optimization company that did or does your seo for you then it's not entirely free but once the work is done you may be able to just sit there on top of the search engine results indefinitely. You could also learn to do the seo yourself and then your lofty position in the serps (search engine results pages) would actually be for free. However, when you compare the cost of an organic search engine optimization campaign to that of an ongoing pay per click campaign there is no doubt that it's cheaper to go organic. A good and honest seo should be able to rank your site near or at the number one position in google and have it stay there with out much upkeep. Seo's frequently try to over emphasize the need for ongoing maintenance because they want to make more money! While it is true that in some cases seo needs to be an ongoing thing because of the competitive nature of some niches, in large part once the initial ranking has been achieved you really shouldn't need much more in the way of maintenance. So watch out for that. Sometimes less scrupulous seo's will use their own network of sites and pages to link to your site and help it achieve the desired ranking. The problem with that is that as soon as you decide you don't need the "maintenance" anymore they pull your links from their network and your ranking dive-bombs! Then they tell you, "See, you need us in order to maintain your position" when in fact they are just shady businessmen.
