Galvanised sheet metal is very much undervalued by all but the experienced user. It is in fact an incredibly tough product, durable and far easier to paint than most, if not all other, sheet metal. Treated galvanised sheet metal for example is used extensively in outdoor applications, predominantly as protection for an area from our rather unpleasant English weather. The galvanising actually protects the steel against corrosion by creating a protective barrier. Once treated, galvanised sheet metal, because of its relative stiffness in comparison to some of the softer metals, becomes a little more difficult to shape or work; but there is some terrific compensation in the form of greatly extended product life expectancy. Hot dip galvanised steel sheet metal for example carries excellent resistance to corrosion and doesnâ'â"t necessarily need to be painted if you donâ'â"t want to. It can just as easily be left bare. Spangle is created when molten zinc attaches itself to the steel sheet after it is cooled below the melting point of zinc. This zinc-alloy surface is moderately rough increases its acceptance of paint. It is also very user friendly where welding may be required. The ability of galvanised sheet metal to readily accept paint makes it a very good choice for use in the automotive industry and in the manufacture of white goods such as fridges and even microwaves. Generally, to the unknowing, any product made with steel is thought to be quite heavy but in reality this is simply not the case. Sheet metal is generally light, relatively easy to handle and most certainly an economical choice for many applications.
