Garden fountains have always defined a garden's beauty and elegance because of their combined artistry and science. The site and sound of water flowing up and down is sure to provide brilliance to one's garden and relax anyone at its presence. Ancient fountains were built and used by different civilizations for different purposes. Stationary fountains which stored fresh, stagnant water were built to provide citizens with precious water. The most well-known civilization who are known to have constructed the most effective water distribution system is the ancient Romans. If a body of fresh water is too far from a Roman city, the Romans would construct an elaborate system of aqueducts that serve as the pipe network where the water from the nearest stream, falls, or lake would flow along. Along the aqueducts, reservoirs were also built to store the collected fresh water to be distributed again via another network of aqueducts going all the way to the city's wells, pools, baths and fountains. Ancient fountains were crucial to the local populous since this is where they get their fresh water supply they need for drinking. Aside from being a necessary structure, ancient fountains were also built to make certain areas more attractive to everyone especially travelers from far-away lands. Nowadays, fountains have become more of a decorative concept rather than that of necessity. Fountains of today are aesthetic necessities for big businesses establishments in order to attract both moderate and higher classes of customers avail for their services. Five-star hotels and other classy establishments have constructed sophisticated and elaborate fountains wherein the flow of water is controlled by different nozzles which independently moves and are often programmed to move in a synchronized manner. These fountains are known as "Dancing Fountains." New kinds of dancing fountains have been produced to bring more pizzazz highlight to the fountain. These fountains have been incorporated with neon LED lights in a very innovative way in which some have lights remain within the beam of water squirted out. The appeal of garden fountains take people back to the classical old times as well as being closely in tune with nature. Two of the most common garden fountains are the free standing fountains and the other are the space-saver wall fountains. The type of fountain that is often recognized as the more traditional is the free-standing fountain. Free standing fountains usually have two or three tiers that vary in sizes and the bottom tier serves as the biggest basin. These type of fountains are often sculpted from stone which is a traditional practice since ancient times. Nowadays, new methods in crafting traditional free-standing fountains include materials like concrete, metal and cement and other materials like plastic and porcelain have also been introduced. Another type of garden fountain is known as wall fountains. Wall fountains are often the main choice for people who wants to add a little bit of elegance to their gardens and at the same time saving space on their gardens. Some residential owners add fountains to their gardens not only for the fountain's aesthetic purpose, but to let water flow and water the plants. Of course adding a network of pipes is necessary in order to let the water flow along the path where the plants are.
