Get Treated By A Doctor If You Have Yeast Infections When You Are Pregnant

By: Marvin Gemin Home | Health-and-Fitness

One of the most important pregnancy tips is to get treatment for yeast infections immediately, especially if you are pregnant.

Yeast infections are a very common occurrence infection among pregnant women. These are usually caused by Candida albicans, it is also called moniliasis of the vagina. The yeast is found in the normal flora of the vagina and it would not cause any infection, however, because of the hormonal changes in the body, the estrogen levels may be increased and this can cause the vagina to produce more glycogen. That increase in glycogen is a good sustenance to the yeast which may make them increase in quantity. The result, yeast infection.

If you develop symptoms of the yeast infections when you are pregnant, immediately consult with the doctor. It is likely to get worse if it remains untreated. There are times when the symptoms just disappear; however, it is not a risk that you should take, especially with the fetus life at stake.

Now, if you do have it, the doctor will take some samples to make sure that you really do have the infection. At times the results are negative, be thankful if they are. But if they are positive, the doctor would have to prescribe some medications for you.

Now, you may think that it is just a common infection anyway, so why not just go to the drug store and get an OTC treatment for the infection. True, there are medications for the infection which are OTCs, however, you will not have an idea if the yeast infection is sexually transmitted, if the medication can affect the fetus and cause its death. Remember this warning at all times: no oral antifungal drug can be given during pregnancy to treat vaginal yeast infection.

Clotrimazole suppositories and creams which can be inserted into the vagina are considered safe and effective than those containing nystatin. Always, always, consult with the doctor. Do not make this a hit or miss activity. Yeast can spread to the fetus and harm it; the medicine used can harm it too. Don’t take risky steps simply to avoid going to the doctor.
