By: Gen Wright Home | Business

Many people overlooked freshwater pearl jewelry when they are shopping for accessories. Maybe that's because they know very little about freshwater pearls, and are unaware of its characteristics and benefits. If you are one of them, perhaps this article will offer you a new and interesting alternative.

Where freshwater pearls come from.

In ancient times, freshwater pearls come from natural oyster shells. A pearl starts to form when an irritant enters a pearl oyster. To reduce the irritation, the pearl secretes a special type of liquid that wraps around the irritant. A new layer is constantly built upon the previous layer, until the pearl becomes of considerable size.

It is very difficult to locate a natural pearl. Hundreds of pearls have to be opened with a special tool before someone can tell whether there is a pearl in it or not. This is a very time consuming process, and there is no guarantee of success. Therefore, such pearls are very valuable. In the past, only nobles and highly affluent families can afford to own pearls.

However, in modern times, pearls are produced in a very different manner. Pearls that are produced with human intervention is known as cultured pearls. Freshwater pearls are usually cultured pearls. In other words, they have gone through a special operation to ensure that pearls are produced by these oysters. The pearls are then harvested by the pearl farmers, and sold to trading companies, which in turn sell the pearls to jewelry retailers or consumers.

The value of freshwater pearl jewelry.

Similar to natural pearls, the larger and rounder the pearl, the more valuable the pearl. High quality freshwater pearls are perfectly round, and there is no hint of contaminants on the surface of the pearl. There is a translucent quality in all freshwater pearls, which makes them look radiant and elegant.

That also means that freshwater pearls can come in many different shapes and sizes. The more uniquely shaped pearls are usually reserved for craft projects. They are also cheaper. Pearls that are perfectly round are reserved for pearl jewelry. All kinds of jewelry can produced just by matching the right pearls with the right chain or ring.

You can find all sorts of pearl jewelry offered by retailers - pearl necklaces, pearl earrings, pearl rings, pearl bracelets, and more. And since they come in different colors as well, you can also create different styles from pearl jewelry. For instance, you can create a mystical style just by wearing jewelry with black pearls.

As you can see, freshwater pearl jewelry are affordable, elegant looking, and comes in such a wide variety that for sure, you will be able to find something that is suitable for you. With freshwater pearl jewelry added to your existing jewelry collection, you can now create any style you want.
