Getting To Know Prefold Diapers

By: Adam Webster Home | Home-and-Family | Babies-Toddlers

If you have a baby, you might want to consider prefold diapers. As simple as they might seem, though, not everyone is well aware of this. Built with more coverage in the middle than on the sides, they're a great, multi-use option for any new parent who is interested.

Flat diapers resemble prefolds, but don't come with the extra layers where they're needed. Often they don't do a good enough job because they simply don't hold up. Prefolds, however, take their basic shape to new level and offer the right protection in the most essential place to protect in all sorts of situations.

There are many different types of prefolds. Usually you'll be able to find some sort of identification, like 4x8x4, which tells you the amount of layers on the sides and on the bottom - in this case, four and 8 respectively. Higher quality diapers have more layers where it counts the most, and will last longer than less heavy cloth diapers.

Those 4x8x4s are the best prefolds you can hope to get, although 4x6x4s often work nearly as well, and even better when paired with a doubler. There are some advantages to getting diapers with fewer layers in that they breathe more easily and dry faster, but they aren't worth it if you need the extra protection provided in having more layers.

You'll have a couple options to consider with these diapers, first whether you want bleached or unbleached and then whether you want organic or regular. Both unbleached and organic diapers are more expensive, but the former lasts longer and both have many qualities that people say makes the extra cost worth getting a better product.

Cotton is a very common material for making cloth diapers, and with good reason. Not only will these diapers last while your baby wears them, they can serve additional purposes once he grows out of them, such as to act as a cleaning rag. There are other materials used to make diapers, but these just don't stand up as well as cotton does.

The only thing that does provide a challenge to cotton is the new trend of hemp prefolds. These are made out of a couple different types of hemp - woven jersey or woven muslin - and are even better at lasting through time than cotton. They also absorb more and resist mold and mildew. It's no surprise, then, that they also cost more, but there are many varieties to consider.

There is a wide range of differences between more and less expensive diapers. The cheapest can be as much as an inch and a half shorter and an ounce lighter than the priciest models, and you should find the right balance of quality and good price.

To really get an idea of which prefold diapers will work the best for you, you really need to try out several pairs. Consider first their usage and your needs to avoid buying what you really won't use. When you find the right type, however, you'll find that you really can appreciate cloth diapers and will recommend them to everyone you know.
