Going Against the Grain: How Your Business Can Benefit From Adding Gluten Free

All of us who know someone who can only eat gluten free have wondered- why doesn’t
this restaurant just add a gluten free option? They’d make so much money off it. Not
only is it a considerate thing to do to have gluten free options at your restaurant, cafe, or
grocery store- but it earns you money.
Fidelity Investments has released a report that states a dining chain (Applebees, Chillis,
Outback) could increase sales by 9 percent with a gluten free option. Just an option!
That’s a quarter million in profit per store per year.
Because so many people either have the allergy or identify with it, they can really turn a
dime.
There are about 9 million customers concerned with gluten and could be persuaded to
visit a restaurant more often if they took the steps needed to give them their options. Of
course the food has to be good and well priced.
Consider those pizza and calzone/pasta dishes. They could be substituted with chestnut
flour. And in a nation where 5 percent can’t even eat gluten, it serves everyone.
The single gluten allergy person does not just account for themselves though. They
control the choice of often huge, profitable dining parties. So you are really losing about
20 percent of your customers not just 5.
Entrepreneurs know how to make people happy and gluten free is definitely the way to
do it.
Also because so few Establishments are doing it, you will make yourself stand out in
the eyes of the person with the allergy. They are more likely to leave a review on yelp or
make some other positive mention of your brand, due to you accommodating them.
Many websites monitor gluten free restaurants and review them. Dining out gluten free
is now easier with increased awareness, but still a commodity in some areas.
The gluten intolerance group can help you come up with a gluten free menu. Also they
can tell you the guidelines for gluten free, including contamination and proper staff
training to explain the option.
And as always, feel free to ask us at Girolami Farms for some good recipes!
