• Purity

The purity of the metal is measured in carat. The purest ones are referred to as 24K and the least pure varieties are referred to as 10K. Pure gold is so soft that it is usually mixed with other metals for hardening it. The greater the gold content in the mixture the costlier it is.

• Colour

Pure gold is bright yellow. Any other tinge found with the yellow comes from the other materials used to make the mixture. If the proportion of other materials is high, the other colour is more prominent.

• Hardness

Gold has to be mixed with other materials to make it hard enough to be used as jewellery. However, good jewellers will always tell you the amount of impurities that have been mixed to create a certain ornament.
