Golf Ball Comparisons - Picking The Best Golf Ball Made Easy

By: Mike Singh Home | Finance

Golfers love their drivers, putters and irons. But, they often forget another important part of their arsenal when looking to improve their game - the golf ball.

Just like the clubs, there are also many types of golf balls according to the materials used, the spin attributes, the distance capability and the compression characteristics. Yes, indeed, golf balls are a universe unto themselves that choosing which one is as difficult as choosing which club to use. Well, we make it easier for you with these steps in choosing the right golf balls.

Determine Appropriate Compression

Simply put, compression is the measure of the ball's hardness when pressed by the fingers. Thus, the general rule is that the higher the compression, the harder the ball will feel. This means that the ball will experience lesser compression upon impact with the clubhead.

A myth must be busted here. Many golfers mistakenly believe that the ball with the highest compression will fly farther, which is not true. Clubhead speed, swing speed, the angle of the club loft and the dimples are key to the ball traveling greater distances. In fact, you might be better off with lower compression balls! By the way, the compression rating for golf balls is usually set at 70 to 110.

Determine Spin Rates

Nowadays, spin rates are determined by the softness of the ball's cover instead of its construction. However, the old rules of the two-piece ball providing for less spin and more distance while a multi-layer ball produces more spin and more feel still applies.

There are also recommendations and observations like 2-piece balls being good for novice players because it maximizes distance and minimizes spin, the 3-piece performance ball is for intermediate golfers with no problems on their backspin and the 4-piece performance balls are for handicappers and expert players with fast swings.

Whatever the choice you make in golf balls, we recommend sticking to it for a while to achieve some consistency before jumping to another brand. However, it is also advisable to change balls depending on the location and weather conditions especially when you are adept at controlling the other factors in distance and control. Thus, performance balls are for difficult greens and wide fairways while a 2-piece ball is for easy greens and narrow fairways.

Determine Your Budget

Like it or not, golf is an expensive sport. The golf balls can cost as much as $5 a piece and if you regularly lose them, it will cost you 100's of dollars a year. Thus, we recommend buying the balls within your budget, sponsor or no sponsor. Or you can always go for the recycled ones that cost less but perform similarly.
