Good Search Content Guidelines

By: Home | Internet-and-Business

Search engines have quickly become one of the biggest and most popular ways that users choose to access the Internet. This is only reasonable, because the Internet has quickly grown (and is continuing to grow) at a tremendous rate, making it difficult to keep track of the millions upon millions of websites available. Search engines make the chaos of the World Wide Web much more accessible by allowing users to look for websites relevant to their interests.

As such, it has become important for nearly all websites to be aware of how search engines work, and how to better optimize themselves for these search engines. Every website wants to attract more visitors. One of the best ways to do this is to be listed in a relatively high position on the major search engines for keywords relevant to the website.

First off, webmasters have to realize that searching on these search engines is keyword based. Users type words or phrases into entry boxes, and the results that search engines yield will be based on these keywords. For instance, searching using the keywords office furniture" would typically give users a list of office furniture dealer and manufacturer websites.

Because of this, the first step in getting a website listed as relevant search content is to choose which particular keywords the website would be associated with. With the example above, furniture dealers would choose such keywords as office furniture" to focus their search engine optimization efforts on. It would be helpful to draw up a list of these target keywords to refer to during the course of improving the website for search engines.

Now we go to some HTML revisions for each page in the website that would make them more search engine friendly. The title of the HTML page should generally be short and descriptive of the purpose of the page. If possible, insert some keywords into the title, but be careful not to do it in a way that garbles the title. An effective title without keywords is still better than a bad one with keywords in it.

Next, metatags should be used in the head portion of the HTML code. Description" and keywords" metatags are particularly important, and should be present in each page of the website. The description should be a short sentence describing the page in a relevant manner. Again, if possible, use some of your target keywords, but again, also, it is important not to overdo it. The keyword metatag is more obvious, and should contain several of the target keywords relevant to the specific page.

Heading tags are also useful. A lot of search engines place emphasis on text within heading tags. Thus, use the appropriate keywords as headings. Use a single tag per webpage with the most important keywords, and then a few or tags depending on the page structure.

Finally, the text of the page itself should contain the target keywords. The frequency of these keywords should be significant, but not unnaturally high. Many search engines now employ methods to counteract keyword spam.
