By: Bailey Smith Home | Business | Careers-Employment

If you have a knack for computers and computer science and want to work in a field that is rapidly growing and can offer you a lot of room for advancement and growth then you should think about getting a degree in Nursing Informatics. Nursing Informatics is a relatively new field that combines a lot of computer science with practical nursing. Computers are a huge part of how a hospital runs these days and in the future hospitals and doctors and nurses are going to be relying more and more on computers. The field of Nursing Informatics is focused on creating new computer systems and applications that can help nurses do their jobs more efficiently, take better care of patients and get information about their patients as quickly as possible. Nursing Informatics is a very exciting field if you have a nursing background and if you want to be influential in the future of nursing or if you have a computer science background and you want to be instrumental in creating new software and new computer applications that could improve the health care industry and save lives. Because the field of Nursing Informatics is so new the industry is wide open and people who have a Nursing Informatics degree can find work at computer companies creating software geared towards helping nurses and other medical professionals or in diagnostic labs and medical research facilities working programmers and doctors to find a way to bridge the gap between getting information from the patient and getting a diagnosis as quickly as possible or in hospitals finding ways to help the administration of the hospital run more smoothly and improve the interaction between hospital staff, doctors, and patients.

If you have been a nurse for awhile and you want to shift the focus of your career and move into a career that is a little less physically demanding but you still want to work in a job where you can use your valuable nursing experience and knowledge then you should think about going back to school to get a degree in Nursing Informatics. Nursing Informatics is a great field for anyone with previous nursing experience who feels comfortable enough with technology to learn new applications. You don’t need to have a lot of background in computer science in order to be good at Nursing Informatics you just need to have an open mind and be able to figure out how new technology works fairly easily. In order for the programs and applications that are being developed in Nursing Informatics to really be useful for nurses in the field it’s important that people who are developing the applications get input from experienced nurses so going into Nursing Informatics could give you the chance to help shape the future of nursing. You also could easily transition from practical nursing to Nursing Informatics and get a nice pay increase once you get a degree in Nursing Informatics. You could even go on to teach in a Nursing Informatics program.
