Gout Causing Foods

Which gout foods to eat and which to avoid? Lots of gout victims are confused. Don't worry, here's a list of gout foods to eat, and, gout causing foods to avoid in your diet. But, in order to determine a gout diet you can eat, we have first to understand the cause of gout.Now, most people know that the symptoms of gout are due to uric acid crystals that have formed in the joints and connective tissue. And these are formed out of higher-than-normal uric acid concentrations in the blood.

Gout symptoms can be debilitating and extremely painful, hampering the range of movement. It can also cause discoloration, severe swelling and pain. Gout causing foods include red meat, other kinds of meat like venison and turkey and processed meats like bacon, liver, brains and kidneys. As well, some fish like mackerel, sardines and anchovies which have high levels of purine, and legumes and vegetables like mushrooms, spinach and asparagus.

Anchovies, bouillon, brains, broth, consomme, dried legumes, fish, goose, gravy, heart, herring, kidneys, liver, mackerel, red meat, meat extracts, mincemeat, mussels, partridge, poultry (especially turkey), roe, sardines, scallops, shellfish, shrimps, sweetbreads, baker's yeast, brewer's yeast, yeast extracts. And you must avoid all alcohol.

Uric acid levels can increase also when the kidneys are not functioning as well as that should. When either of these things happen the high levels of acid in the blood,this excess uric acid, collects in the joints and start to crystallize, causing extreme pain and swelling of the joint. Organ Meat. While I personally do not like foods such as liver or heart, many people do. This may be fine if you don't have gout, but if you do this is asking for disaster. Organ meat is much higher in purine content than muscle meats such as tenderloin. Also, be careful when choosing foods such as hot dogs or sausage because they are often filled with filler, in other words, ground up organ meat.

Gout happens when the body is producing too much acid or due to the fact that the body doesn't eliminate well enough. Amount of uric acid in the body is increased by some foods that contain the chemical purine.Purine is break down in the kidney and becomes uric acid which will eventually be eliminated by the body through urine or sweat. Foods that are high in purine is normally not encouraged for people who have gout or have a high risk of getting it.

Some people are just unable to remove this acid fast enough and are constantly being burdened with gout attacks. Gout is very painful and debilitating it can be hard to think, let alone walk, when you are in so much pain and that can make life very hard. When you are suffering from a gout attack there is only one thing that you are thinking about and that is how to make it stop.

The main way is through foods with high purine in them. So one of the ways to decrease uric acid in the blood stream, and to stop crystal formations from settling into your joints, is to lessen your intake of purine. The best way to do that is with a smart diet. Foods with high and rich protein, and foods containing low carbohydrates are the first to watch for. Below is a list of different foods that have been determined by dietitians to contain high concentrations of purine.
