GPS or global positioning system is a tracking device used to find the exact location of vehicles, persons, or other products to which it is attached. It is a positioning system that through one-way satellite communications are capable of recoding the position of the vehicle, person or products at frequent interval. This system is widely used across different companies to keep a track on their employees and fleets. The invention of GPS was primarily for the military use and the first GPS satellite was launched in February, 1978. GPS tracking system was developed by the U.S Department of Defense and this system can be freely used by anyone for different purposes. This system has come as a great help for the drivers as with the help of this system they can properly navigate the route without any deviations. Working Process of GPS Tracking The GPS tracking system functions with the help of a constellation of satellites and receivers station on the ground. Currently there are twenty-nine satellites orbiting the planet that complete two sets of rotations everyday and receive and send data from the earth. GPS receiver look for the signals from the satellites orbiting the planet and the GPS device then determine the exact location on the ground by calculating its distance from each of the satellite. The calculated distance can be stored n the tracking device or can be sent to Internet connected computer or to a centrally located database. The data is sent using a satellite modem or radio, which is inside the GPS unit. The location of the person or vehicle is displayed against a map backdrop. The location is displayed in either real-time or later analyzed using customized programming software.
