Graduation Gown Essentials

By: Jimmy Richardson Home | Reference-and-Education

The general image is clear in most people’s minds; the long, dark gown, the sharp-edged cap and the dangling tassels. Graduation gowns are seen as symbols of a good education, of a solid accumulation of learning. They symbolize the world of academia and bring with it a sense of hope for a better future. Seeing students marching about in their graduation formals, hems flowing gracefully, graduation caps poised tall and high, tassels counting their credentials, brings with it an optimism that is ready made to conquer all despair. Feasting our eyes upon graduating scholars assures us that what is to come will be healthier than what has passed, even if the past was full of nothing but grace. The graduation gown itself has a few essentials that must be followed in one way or another to make it complete. After all, in the world of academia, failure to follow instructions is not looked upon as a gift. Instructions are to be followed if any worthy result is to be achieved.

The basic academic dress comprises of at least a gown and a graduation hat. The gown is generally made up of two shades, with the predominant color signifying the status of the student. The high school graduation caps and gowns is usually primarily colored black, with a tinge of either white or some other shade around the collar and down the front. Preschool graduation gowns may be composed of a variety of different colors, on the other hand. As preschool graduations don’t have the same gravitas as say a Masters Convocation ceremony, they can be more playful in their approach. After all, who wants little preschool graduates to be all serious? Their world is full of color and joy, and their graduations should be no different. With the gown, the other essential are graduation hats. These almost always match the color of the gown, and carry the qualifying tassels on them. The tassels are another important part of graduation dresses. They signify the qualifications of the student up to that point of their academic career and must be slipped over to the opposite side to complete the graduation process. Most schools prefer to use sashes as well. These are hung loosely about the neck and usually contain some written information, like the name of the school and the year of graduation. As long as these basic principles are being followed, a graduation dress can be considered complete. From here on, the governing body may decide to add other accessories. It should also be noted that most of these items are customizable. For instance, the administration may choose to alter the design of the graduation caps or add their own twist to the gowns.

So long as basic principles are being followed, an academic dress can be considered complete. However, one cannot forfeit the necessary items, like the graduations caps and the gown. In that case, the academic dress stands disqualified. With higher studies, a code of color must also be followed.
