Grey Hair And Its Causes

By: altruist Home | Health-and-Fitness | Alternative-Medicine

Herbs have been used in the traditional folk medicine of many cultures for thousands of years to treat premature aging conditions such as premature graying hair. Admittedly, traditional medicines have not always been effective in treating grey hair and to this day no herbal or medicinal cure for age-related and genetically-determined grey hair conditions exists. Nonetheless, herbal remedies have experienced a tremendous revival in popularity recently and now account for well over 50% of all hair care products sold.

But what actually is the reason for our hair turning grey? "Well, there is no one reason", says, Dr Anjali Dange, dermatologist and hair transplant surgeon, "it's a culmination of various factors that lead to graying of hair among youngsters between 20 and 35 years and among children who are as young as seven years". "In fact", quips Dr Dange, "one in every five adults in their 20's suffer from grey hair".

The reasons for hair turning grey range from hereditary or genetic factors, wherein grey hair are passed down to the next generation to an unhealthy and incomplete diet that lacks essential nutrients like copper, iodine, iron, vitamin B12. Stress and anxiety also contribute significantly towards premature graying of hair.

Dietary supplements are instrumental in promoting growth of healthy hair and pigment restoration in grey hair. They contain copper salt, para-aminobenzoic acid or salts, pantothenic acid or salts, and vitamin B6 in an appropriate proportion. These chemicals can retard, prevent, suppress, and even reverse the graying of hair. It can lead to restoration of healthy hair without the use of dyes, colorants, or the like.

Genetics and heredity also play a big role in the rate at which hair turns grey. Some children are born with whitish or grey hair. Nothing can be done about inherited traits other than dying the hair. The two genes that appear to be responsible for the graying process are Bxl2 and Bcl-w.

Do not apply contact irritants from "helpful" friendly advices or home remedy tips! This may cause further worsening of the lesions and sometimes even cause permanent scarring if the irritant reaction is severe. It is to be noted that mild counter irritant effect does actually produce hair growth in some patients of alopecia areata. Possibly new inflammatory cells attracted to the area may be flushing out the auto antibodies and releasing the hair roots from their inhibitory effects.

There are a few factors that can effect this process. The first is smoking. Several studies have shown that tobacco smokers are often significantly more likely to prematurely grow grey hair. This is often cited as a major reason to quite smoking. On top of this smoking has many other detrimental effects on the health of an individual. Chemo-therapy can also have effects on hair color. It has been shown that people with grey hair who receive chemo therapy may begin to grow darker hair.

The best advantage of such orals vitamins is that they are specifically aimed at growth of healthy hair and to cure hair related problems. They influence the hair follicles resulting in eradication the problem. At times, they retard or suppress the problem and rejuvenate healthy hair at a later stage.
