Grow Your Small Business Via Diversification Route

By: David Parks Home | Business

In the business world characterised by fierce competition and number-game, foraying into new segments, expanding product portfolio as well as reaching out to unconventional markets have become imperative for small businesses. Strategic diversification is the key to capture a large global market share and increase profitability. Expanding market reach will also help firms to enhance their business prospects and achieve higher growth.

Diversify to boost business value

Branching into new and different market segments is imperative for SMEs as it enables them to lower business risks over time by capitalising on the growth opportunities and maximising return on investment (RoI).

â€Although diversification either through introduction of a new product or expansion into a new market involves investment, it is an important task for small businesses as it leads to improved utilisation of capacity, improved work flow and overall efficiency enhancement through concentrated and synergised efforts,†said Rakesh Kumar Maheshwari, proprietor of Badrivishal Textiles, a small-sized textile mill in Kolhapur.

However, small companies need to understand the form of diversification that is best suited to meet their long-term goals. Carrying out a thorough market research and formulating a clear and strategic diversification strategy will help small companies to mitigate the risks involved in rolling out new products or expanding business operations through geographical diversification.

â€Before a company diversifies its product mix or ventures into a new market, it is crucial to weigh the risk factors and chart out a plan, which ensures that diversification results in an overall stronger unique value proposition,†said Vijay Sarda, proprietor of a Ford dealership store in Nanded, Maharashtra.

Keeping in mind the changing business environment, seeking lucrative markets while leveraging on the company strengths has become the need of hour for several small entities.
