Guide To Must-have Adventure Gear

By: Andrew Hall Home | Travel-and-Leisure

So you’ve just been bitten by the adventure bug and are overpowered by the urge to pack your bags and take off on a journey to connect with nature. But before you do that, you need to make sure you’re prepared for the wild, wild outdoors.

Whether it’s a trek you’re going on or a camping trip, there are some essentials that every adventure travel enthusiast worth his or her salt must have.

  1. Hiking Boots: A good pair of hiking boots is one of the most essential items you’ll need for your outdoor activities. Although most such boots are designed for hiking, they can also be used for other activities like mountaineering, backpacking, climbing, hunting, etc. You’ll be amazed at how many types of hiking boots there are, but you should pick a pair that can be used for most of the activities you plan to pursue.
  2. Camera: When you’re outdoors, you’ll see nature at its best, and to capture some of these moments, you will need a good quality camera. While serious amateur photographers prefer carrying SLR or DSLR cameras, digital point and shoot cameras are usually very convenient and give excellent results.
  3. Swiss Knife: Swiss knife or any other multi-functional pocket knife is one of the most important items on an adventure traveler’s must-have list. The knife usually has a bunch of tools that have several uses from opening bottles to tightening screws. Make sure you always have the knife on your person because you never know when you might need it. The outdoors can be full of surprises!
  4. Rain Gear: Weather can be unpredictable so it’s best to be prepared for any unexpected rain with a good quality rain-proof jacket. There are lots of lightweight varieties available, which can fold up into really small sizes so as not to take up too much room in your luggage or backpack.
  5. First Aid Kit: I cannot emphasize enough the importance of carrying a first-aid kit with items such as bandage, gauze tape, antiseptic creams, sting relief, anti-burn cream, analgesics, antacid, sterile wipes, etc. Don’t even think of stepping out without a fully stocked first aid kit.
  6. GPS Device: The new age substitute for maps and compass, many hikers and campers now prefer handheld GPS navigation devices to figure out their position and routes to destinations. The one thing you’d want to consider when buying such a device is that it is battery operated. And make sure the battery life of the system you buy is sufficient to last you throughout your trip.
  7. Luggage: This is perhaps the single most essential item that an adventure traveler must have. While most prefer large travel packs for their gear, another popular option is a duffle (unless you’re going on a backpacking trip). Large expedition duffles have a lot of capacity to hold all your gear. You should also have a small daypack. Some large travel packs have attached daypacks that can be zipped off. The other option is to buy them separately. The daypack should ideally hold have all the essentials that you might need during your activities such as a water bottle holder, sunscreen, first aid, etc.
