Guitar Humidifiers- What You Need To Know About Extending The Life Of Your Acoustic Guitar

By: Marius Vosloo Home | Arts-and-Entertainment

If you own an acoustic guitar, you should be cautious of dry conditions or environments. By ignoring these conditions you will cause irreversible damage to your acoustic guitar. Avoid these cracks in the wood at all costs. It's all about preserving your musical instrument, and looking after your investment.

A solution to this problem is to humidify your guitar through a guitar humidifier. This device releases moisture inside the guitar via the sound-hole. Sound-hole humidifiers all use a water tank with a porous medium including a sponge, water absorbent floral foam or absorbent polymer. The medium is surrounded by a certain cover which ensures that the water absorbent medium is held in place and limits the evaporation from the medium. To find a way within your guitar, they sneak in between the guitar strings and are held in place there. Based upon the make of humidifier you acquire, there's a possibility it could touch the interior wood of your guitar. Dampit is known for lying inside a guitar. Two top brands that are entirely hanging from the strings, are Oasis and Planet Waves.

There are certain factors that you should keep in mind when it comes to refilling the device. The capacity of the water reservoir and limitation level of the outer cover are the key determining factors. There are numerous humidifiers that are able to hold an ounce (thirty cc's) or more. Should your guitar require lots of moisture and your humidifiers' reservoir capacity is restricted to only 10 cc's, it has to be refilled within a few days again.

Planet Waves and Dampit use openings in the outer casing to release moisture. Oasis makes use of a textile which enables the water vapor, but not the water, to go through the fabric to keep your guitar humidified. The big drawback to evaporation holes is the hazard of water seepage. Extremely cautious usage can reduce, but not remove this risk. Oasis is a water-tight, sealed unit which removes the likelihood of a water leak.

Oasis is one of the most innovative brands in the market. It has a built-in indicator that informs you when the next refill is due. It's an elastic sealed container which shrinks as the water inside of it evaporates through the fabric. The moment Oasis starts looking like a shriveled up raisin , you have to replenish the water.

Every one of the sound-hole humidifiers works really well. Every individual brand has its own advantages and disadvantages. You should know the operating instructions, before you use it.

You now have the knowledge of how to extend the life of your acoustic guitar. You'll share many memories together, just enjoy playing your guitar.
