I've been playing guitar for several years and one component of finding your comfortable style of playing is picking out what kind of guitar string you works for you. There are all different types of gauges and materials you can choose from. If you like playing a more lead style you would want to try a type of guitar string that is thinner and more flexible so it is not as hard to bend. If you like playing heavy rhythm you would want something that is thick and would get a good crunch with lots of distortion. Perhaps you would like the incorporate both of those styles and would get a use out of a combination of those two. For me personally, I've found Ernie Ball strings to be an excellent string. They have a wide variety to choose from. There are different gauges, combinations of gauges, thin and thick alike. The one that I buy most often are the skinny top heavy bottoms. This means the top strings are skinny for lead style, and the tops are heavy to get a good chunk distortion. The sound and consistency they produce is also very pleasing. Every time I've bought a pack of them they are topnotch and have no defects. There is however a few rare occasions where I have bought a pack of them and when tuning the smallest string it has snapped on me, but this isn't a common occurrence. If you are unsure about what kind of strings to get, or what brand to get, these are the ones that I would recommend. Try out different styles of strings and see what ones fit you best for your playing style.
