Hair Loss In Women

By: Gareth Hoyle1 Home | Health-and-Fitness | Diseases-and-Conditions

Male pattern baldness or â€Androgenetic alopecia’, to give its scientific name, is a common condition. However hair loss also effects women significantly, and can be a distressing and upsetting condition. Hair loss in women often follows a different pattern to that in men; while men develop a thinning hair line, or balding patch on the top or back of the head, hair loss in women tends to be through increased thinning of the overall hair.

Causes of Women’s Hair Loss

There are a number of causes of hair loss for women †medical conditions and reactions to medicines can cause hair loss. Chemotherapy is a common cause of hair loss in both genders, while child-birth and the menopause can cause thinning or loss of hair in women. Shampoos, conditioners, dyes and other products can also cause a reaction which results in hair loss. Stress can cause alopecia, in both men and women, and can be very hard to deal with, as the resulting loss of hair can cause further stress and depression.

While it is perfectly normal to loose some hair on a daily basis, large clumps of loss can cause distress, depression and low self-esteem, for both men and women. Hair loss after childbirth is often deeply distressing; however, this is a common condition. The result of a reaction by the body to the changing hormones during pregnancy and after giving birth, this type of hair loss is not normally permanent. The good news is that your hair will normally grow back healthily and naturally within twelve months.

Restoring your Hair

While there is, as yet, no definitive cure for hair loss, there are a number of treatments and products on the market that can help resolve the problem. The key to recovering from hair loss is to discover the cause. If medical treatment is causing hair loss, and specifically chemotherapy treatment, hair will normally re-grow, once the course of treatment is complete. If other medicines are causing the problem it will be necessary to discuss this with you doctor, to try to find alternative treatments and drugs. The good news is, once you have identified the cause, be it medical, illness or product related hair growth will often return to normal. However this does not always happen quickly, so you may want to consider treatments or other methods to help in the short term.

Choosing the Right Product

There is a vast range of products available, some with a very dubious record. While homeopathic treatments and the use of chemicals such as â€Finasteride’ and â€Minoxidil’ have had small successes, there is no guarantee that they will work in every case. The cost of some of the treatments may also prove expensive. There have, however, been significant technological advances in systems that use Volumizing and hair extension techniques. This method of replacing lost hair is ideal, when the hair loss has been caused by a medical condition, treatment or in the case of hair loss after childbirth. Many systems will use a mesh worn on the scalp to which the hair is attached †providing an invisible and convincing solution. Compared to the â€medical’ options this will be a great alternative, providing an immediate solution, and allowing your own hair to recover and return to its normal healthy condition.

While hair loss will always be distressing, these types of system will provide an simple, effective, speedy and affordable solution; allowing you to get back to living your life as normal and raising your self-esteem.
