Hawaii Self Storage Book Drive Collects, More Than 4,000 Books And Games

By: Safety Home | Business

HONOLULU - www.hawaiiselfstorage.com - Hawaii Self Storage today loaded up 500 books on the Hawaii Literacy Bookmobile, after collecting 4,096 new and gently used books and educational games as part of its annual book drive to benefit the Bookmobile, which makes three stops two times a week in Waianae. The bookmobile lends out books and educational games to people who may not be able to get to a library.

"We were astounded at the enormous success of this annual drive - last year we collected 300 books during October, and this year, more than 4,000!" said Self Storage Association Daniel Ho. "We promised the Bookmobile 500 of the books, and donated another 500 books to the Foster Family Care Holiday party last month as gifts for the kids, as well as another 500 books to Ewa Beach's Keone'ula Elementary School. Now we are looking to donate the additional 2,596 books to local public elementary school libraries, and are asking interested schools to call us at 949 -SAFE (7233) to discuss their needs."

Hawaii Self Storage offered a $2 credit toward customers' next month locker rental for each new or gently used book or educational game donated during the drive. This incentive helped storage service provider collect 432 books at the Kaimuki location, 661 books at the Salt Lake location and 3,003 books at the Pearl City location. Books range from children's books up to pre-teen books.

"We had built a pyramid of the books on a table at Pearl City, but the table collapsed!" said Shaun Salvador, Hawaii Self Storage Vice President. "This book drive is part of our overall mission to help our community by fostering literacy and learning at all ages in Hawaii."

As a locally owned company, Hawaii Self Storage has made it their mission to help the community, and supports Hawaii Literacy's many programs through an annual book drives at the three Hawaii Self Storage locations.

Hawaii Self Storage also runs the Lockers to Literacy outreach program that is delivering 1,715 books to 11 public elementary schools this year. Through this program $2 from every new locker rental is donated to a fund that is used to purchase books. As Hawaii Self Storage increases in locations (and subsequent locker rentals) this fund is expecting to grow by 2009 to about $18,000 a year, vastly increasing the students it impacts. Hawaii Self Storage also has committed $109,000 to its annual scholarship program that benefits local public high school students. Scholarships are available to students in high schools located near Hawaii Self Storage's Salt Lake, Pearl City and Kaimuki location, as well as to those public school students near the under-construction Mililani and Kapolei locations. Eligible students can receive a $1,000 renewable scholarship for a maximum of two years toward an associate degree and up to four years for a bachelor's degree.
