Hawaiian Tattoo Artists †Carrying On Ancient Traditions

By: Fernanda Gibson Home | Arts-and-Entertainment

Perhaps you may have already seen tribal tattoos and wondered where they originate from. Are they something that tattoo artists came up with recently? Perhaps something that originated in some form of glyphs or older style of art?

A Long History

The fact, is that Hawaiian tattoo artists have been doing these types of tribal style tattoos for uncountable generations. Social anthropologists have traced their beginnings back thousands of years to a time when the Hawaiian Islands were inhabited by peoples that lived in tribal societies.

The Traditions of Hawaiian Tattoo Artists

Hawaiian tattoo artists still do the very same styles and designs that have been passed down from father to son in families where the art of tattoo goes back generations. Also, many people are completely unaware of the meaning that many of these ancient tribal designs hold in them.

Very Special Meanings

In much earlier times, tattoos were used for many purposes in Hawaiian tribal societies. Back then Hawaiian tattoo artists would tattoo people to commemorate the passing of a tribal elder or a loved one or to signify a high level of social stature in a tribe.

Spiritual Hawaiian Tribal Tattoos

Also, many earlier tattoos done by Hawaiian tattoo artists had particular spiritual meaning. Shaman or spiritual healers in a tribe would have their skin tattooed to facilitate communication and connection with the spirit world.

Hawaiian Tattoo Artists †Recognized Around the Globe

Hawaiian tattoo artists are now recognized as some of the best in the world and for traditional tribal tattoos there is no where else that you can have better work done than in one of the many tattoo studios that dot the islands.
