Healing Physiological Disorders Through Bio-feedback

By: Clint Jhonson Home | Health-and-Fitness

The Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback (AAPB), Biofeedback Certification Institution of America (BCIA), and the International Society for Neurofeedback and Research (ISNR) are the three bio-feedback organizations which define this term in an appropriate manner. Bio-feedback is defined as a method through which an individual is able to learn ways in which they could change physiological activity. These physiological activity aids in improving the performance and health conditions.

There are various physiological activities that are measured through some precise instruments of biofeedback. Some of the physiological activities that are treated with such instruments of bio-feedback include breathing, heart function, brainwaves, skin temperature and muscle activity. A feedback is offered by these biofeedback instruments so that it can help in providing information about the health problems in an accurate and rapid manner. Desired form of psychological changes is supported by a combination of this information along with some changes in behavior, thinking and emotions. With the passage of time such kind of changes can be endured without the use of specific instruments.

The human body reacts to any kind of changes when the normal state of functioning of its parts is affected. And such changes offer some signals that bio-feedback instruments helps in detecting, analyzing and presenting. But this is done in a manner which can be easily understood by human being themselves. There are many physiological disorders which can be healed by the use of bio-feedback mechanisms.

Chronic pain is an affliction that has seen resurgence with the sedentary lifestyles. This is found mostly in urban communities in the developed and developing world. Stress and pain combine and accentuate each other to form a vicious deadlock of chronic discomfort. Biofeedback helps in teaching people to relax the muscles and offers indications to treat shortness of breath. The aftermath of a stroke might leave some parts of the body paralyzed impacting the body image imprinted in the brain. A similar situation is when a limb is lost due to amputation, accidents or as a part of a medical treatment, called the phantom limb phenomenon. In such cases bio-feedback is useful in synchronizing the body image in the brain with the new reality.

Headaches due to migraine or stress are another area where bio-feedback instruments are quite useful. Sensors placed on the neck and head help a person in knowing the tense spots leading to better relaxation techniques. Circulatory diseases that are related to blood flow reduction like Raynaud’s disease causes pain in the fingers’ and toes’ extremities during cold weather. Such circulatory diseases are treated through biofeedback treatment. Other area where bio-feedback helps human beings in a right manner includes regulating one’s lifestyle.

Diabetes and blood-pressure is the scourge of our modern lifestyles. So this usually afflicts those people who are not considered to be a part of the demographic traditionally. Biofeedback mechanisms which point out the stress levels to a person help him or her to understand health conditions in a better manner. There are instruments of bio-feedback which helps in finding out the high sugar levels or increased blood pressure. Biofeedback instruments thus give a feedback on what is causing the increase in stress, pressure or glucose level. The bio-feedback instruments also try to find out the exact place where conditions get aggravated. And then it would help in finding out the reason for such a state of the health.
