Help. My Dog Chases Cars

By: Jesse Miller Home |

Dogs chasing cars is a common place thing. Many of us have seen dogs chasing cars every day. Sometimes it can be annoying and sometimes it can be just plane dangerous. This is because a dog might get seriously injured trying to chase a car. A dog chasing a car is by the instinct of the dog. Even though dogs are bred in captivity for thousands of years the natural instinct of a dog has not left it.

The dog is a predator and every thing that is moving is considered a pray. Especially something that is moving that fast has to be a unique pray. And hence dogs keep chasing cars. Also some dogs were trained to herd sheep or cattle. These dogs chase cars thinking that they are supposed to herd them by getting ahead of them. As cute as all this might sound your dog chasing a car can be a very dangerous habit. This is because your dog might serious hurt itself while chasing the car if not by the car that is chasing then by other vehicles that is out there on the road.

Your dog can even meet wit ha fatal accident while chasing cars innocently and hence you should make sure that your dog is well behaved and does no repeat these antics.A fence around the house is a good solution. A leash on your dog is another. But your dogs will be barking anyways weather on the leash or behind the fence at the passing cars and if they per chance become free of their restrains then they will run behind the cars that can cause accidents.

Hence if you really want to cure your dog of this habit then you must find out the root of the problem. This would mean that you need to know why your dog is chasing the cars. Some dogs have territorial issues and they consider others intruders in their territory. This is most common with the delivery people. Hence you should make sure that your dog gets friendly with the delivery people. Also while there are cars passing you could do something more interesting with your dog like play with it or give it agility training. This will reduce the interest of your dogs in passing cars. This way you can slowly cure your dog from the habit of chasing cars and make it the nice and friendly dog that you want it to be.
