Difficult people who you have to deal with on a day-to-day basis can give your management education and skills a run for their money. They also mean a difference between a walk-in-the-park and a session with shrink on a couch.

Steps to Deal with Difficult People in Your workplace

1. Don’t Reinforce the Problem by Wishing It Away
It is quite common to ignore or work around a difficult employee. Managers usually avoid dealing with difficult employees because it can ruin their day. But ignoring the problem will not make it go away; in fact, it becomes all the more severe over time. So don’t reinforce the problem by not attending to it or wishing it away.

2. Act Fast
As soon as such behavior is evident in your organization, attend to it. Otherwise, it can vitiate the atmosphere, raise a cabal, and might even find a group of sympathizers. Colleagues may not approach the difficult person and silently put up with the negative behavior just to get along. Managers have the responsibility of addressing the problem as soon as it rears its head, and see to it that the atmosphere is calm and helps raise productivity.

3. Have One-on-one Sessions
It is quite possible that the difficult employee doesn’t know he is being difficult to deal with and others are irritated by his behavior. Having a one-on-one, heart-to-heart chat about the issue helps the situation; it also helps the concerned person turn the page. If the employee vehemently disagrees with you, calmly produce the examples of his negative behavior and try to convince him that the source of friction is he himself. Personalized support and sympathy could turn a difficult person around in many cases.

But ignoring the problem will not make it go away; in fact, it becomes all the more severe over time. So don’t reinforce the problem by not attending to it or wishing it away.

4. Give Him Time to Deal with Himself
Behavioral patterns, good or bad, are entrenched. A person cannot help it. So, it takes time to get back on track and change one’s thoughts, reactions, and behavior; it’s like slowly healing oneself over a period of time. Managers can provide the person with requisite help in trying to deal with himself first.

5. Terminate if No Other Option is Available
It may be necessary to terminate the employee from his services if everything fails and there is no other option available. In the larger interests of organization, termination is sometimes necessary.
