Not long ago I visited my father in the â€Old Folk’s Homeâ€. This, by the way, is his term for the place. In the brochure it is described as "Independent Retirement Living" with a minimum age requirement of 55 years old. In truth, most residents are older like my father, who is 85, so his description is probably a pretty good one. It was really nice to see that the laundry facilities had been upgraded to a managed service. Every machine is brand-new from well-known manufacturers and boasts EnergyStar efficiency. Instead of coins, these machines work with access cards. Most people choose to prepay by check in order to add value to their cards, although ATM cards and credit cards may also be used. Because they are coinless machines, would-be thieves are unlikely to target the laundry room, and residents benefit from the more secure environment. Michael, the manager, told me he was very happy with the company's service and with efficiency on the few occasions servicing of the machines was necessary. The company has a contract to provide regular maintenance to prevent malfunctions and keep things in good working order. Michael is happy to know while he oversees and maintains so many things at the retirement home, the laundry facility is something he need not worry about. Michael told me he thought very highly of the up-to-date features of the new machines. Particularly impressive was the feature which allows residents to check the availability of machines by using a phone system, remote monitor, or e-mail. This prevents residents from making numerous trips back and forth from the laundry room to check on machine availability. I was pleased by my visit with my father, and was impressed by the new improvements to the "Old Folks Home". It comforts me to know my father is living in a retirement facility that cares for its residents. A facility that strives to make the day to day living of its occupants as easy, safe, and relaxed as possible; even if it's simply by maintaining coinless laundry machines.
