The cacao tree's scientific name is theobroma cacao meaning "fruit of the gods," and just as chocolate making is an ingenious process, so the history of chocolate is full of myths and legends. Chocolate has been used as a drink for nearly all of its history, and the earliest record of using chocolate dates back at least 3300 years to the time of the Olmec people of Middle America.

Picture this for over 2500 years, chocolate like gold, has had a love interest. Chocolate has become the most favorite, most delicious, food today.

The history of chocolate, beginning in Pre-Columbian times was an important drink of the Aztec Indians. Legend tells everybody how Montezuma, the powerful Aztec emperor who ruled a remarkable civilization in central Mexico in the 1st millennium drank 50 cups of chocolate a day! The cocoa bean is considered the ultimate status symbol in the Mayan and Aztec cultures. The word "chocolate" comes from the Aztecs of Mexico and is native. History of chocolate records that the first use of chocolate was drunk, not eaten, and the earliest people to discover the health benefits of chocolate were the Maya.

It is known, chocolate began with Christopher Columbus's discovery of America. The Spanish brought chocolate back home and kept it as a state secret for many years until the secret was stolen from the Spanish and popularized throughout Europe during the 16th and 17th century. The history of chocolate is in many ways the history of the Americas.

For centuries, chocolate has been an intricate part of the history of many countries, and is very diverse from its naming to its creation. The true history of chocolate is one of those histories where fact is stranger than fiction, and takes on the quality of myths, legends, propaganda and inaccuracies which are profound. From the Mayan rain forests that drank the bitter seed extract and added chilies and then traded it to the Aztecs, who lived in drier, cooler places where cacao trees could not grow, the history of chocolate is bittersweet, and for hundreds of years, chocolate has captured the imaginations and taste buds of people around the world.

"Chocolatl", is the Aztec name for this sacred beverage which was consumed from golden cups that the people of Ancient Mexico prized so much. The history of chocolate going back some three thousand years, chocolate has been a temptation to the lovers of sweets for a long time.

The history of chocolate is one that goes back centuries through many cultures, and is intriguing, somewhat dramatic and quite amazing. The love of Chocolate originated from cocoa bean, the seed of a fruit from the cacao tree brought by the god Quetzacoatl, the aroma cacao.
