By: Stephen McBride Home | Travel-and-Leisure

A holiday trip to Ireland must surely include a visit to Connemara. This popular destination allows tourists to explore nature, discover the beauty of the rustic mountains and also learn about the traditions of Ireland.

It is popular destination for mountaineers, hikers and adventurists who are regularly drawn to its deep valleys, steep mountains and marvelous landscape.

You will have more to see if you take a walking tour of the region instead of traveling in a car. You can begin with a walk from Croagh Patrick and go through the Holy Mountain before finally arriving at hills of Killary Harbor, the only fjord in Ireland. This route will afford you the opportunity to se spectacular land formations such as Mweelrea, the highest mountain in Connaught. Continuing you can move on to famous Kylemore Abbey, take a rest at Inagh Valley. The most notable attractions along this trail are the quartzite and Maumturk Mountains Twelve Bens Mountains

Your Ireland holiday visit will also take you to Westport through Oughterard. Hikers along this trail will not forget the fearsome desolate dens along the way and the steep mountains with glistening loughs that dot the way.

For detailed planning, you will begin your day at Westport and arrive at - Drummin the next day. You can take a rest at Leenane and then continue from Tully to Kylemore. These are adventurous routes that provide challenging valleys, rocky landscapes and treacherous valleys.

Still at Connemara in the Galway County in Ireland, you can go along the beach to experience the white sand beaches. Here, you can leisurely trek the coast or just be immersed in its scenery. If you want to be challenged, you can go the other way to the west where you will see the best Irish countryside. One more trail remains: You can ascend the mountains but you will need to be an excellent climber or navigator to see your way round.

Many hikers employ the services of a guide to lead them through these remote but adventurous areas of Connemara. This route has a lot of benefits for the one who will dare make it. Here you will be able to visit the ruins of villages, see outstanding ridges where once many Irish villagers grew potatoes. If you are historically inclined, you can choose the Slí Chonnemara trail that has many old stone walls and tiny cottages. Some of the notable villages along this trail are Gaeltacht and Carna where you can be treated to Irish music and traditions.

There is another good trail option. Dotted with, this route is more coastal and brings you through villages and towns like An Spideal, An Ceathru Rua, Ros Muc and where you could stay with Irish-speaking families and get a great dose of Irish music and culture.
