India as a holiday destination is fast gaining ground. Recently, Conde Naste Readers’ Travel awards were announced and India was voted 7th best holiday destination in the world for its warmth and hospitality. Also, three Indian hotel properties namely, Leela Palace Kempinski, Bangalore; Taj West End, again in Bangalore and The Oberoi, New Delhi appeared in the list of top 10 â€Overseas Business Hotels’. More and more people are now planning vacations in India. Significant growth in the arrival of inbound tourists and the movement of domestic tourists has been registered in the past few years, except for a short period of lull that occurred on account of economic recession and terrorist attack on the top grade Mumbai hotels †The Taj and The Oberoi. But the situation has improved and the Indian tourism industry is ready to welcome travelers with same zeal and enthusiasm. India has something in store for each and every traveler, be they nature lovers, adventure junkies, architectural and history buffs, culture enthusiasts, pilgrims etc. The north of peninsular India is crowned by the mountain ranges of mighty Himalayas and the south is bound by waters of Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. There are hill stations of Ladakh, Shimla, Manali, Darjeeling, Srinagar, Ooty, Kodaikanal, Munnar etc; beaches of Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Gujarat, islands of Andman and Nicobar, Lakshwadeep, wildlife pockets of Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Ranthamabore, Kaziranga, Corbet and desert of Thar spreading towards the west of the country. The rich heritage and culture of India and especially Rajasthan where you can even live like the kings of the yesteryears in their forts and palaces that have now been converted into heritage hotels is a major draw for the tourists. All this makes for a flourishing tourism trade for the country. The Indians by nature warm are hosts, plus have also realized the value of the travel and tourism. The centuries old rich history of the country is manifested in its forts and palaces, museums, mausoleums, temples, Stupas and other interesting structures like the baolis or stepwells at various places like Abhaneri near Jaipur in Rajasthan, Adlaj ki Vava near Ahmedabad in Gujarat etc ; and some crazy monuments like the Hawa Mahal (Place of Winds) in Jaipur; Bara Imambara of Lucknow which is a labyrinth of narrow corridors; Jantar Mantar, an astronomical observatory built at 5 places in India viz. Jaipur (it is the largest one), Delhi, Ujjain, Mathura and Varanasi. The former two are better known and better preserved ones. The forts of Amber in Jaipur, Junagarh in Bikaner, Mehrangarh in Jodhpur, Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh, Jaisalamer that also offers the experience of desert safari have made Rajasthan very popular among the tourists from all over the world. Needless to mention, the monument that tops all others not only in India but in the entire world is the Taj Mahal at Agra. If you haven’t seen Taj Mahal, you haven’t seen India. The statement may seem clichd but nothing describes the magnificence of Taj Mahal better than this. If you can plan your holidays during the festival time you are sure to have double fun. In fact many people come to India just for the colors of the festivals. Camel festival, desert festival, Pushkar fair, Elephant festival, Snake boat race event, dance festivals of Khajuraho & Mamallapuram see a sizeable chunk of tourists. What else can one ask for?
