Fleas are the most annoying and troublesome insects for both humans and their pets. While we can use various products to rid ourselves of fleas, old-fashioned, preventative home remedies relieve us of ever having to have them in the first place.

Various techniques and products are available in the market to get rid of these fleas, but we don’t often get the expected results. Even if we do manage to rid ourselves of the scourge of fleas, this is often not long-lasting or accompanied by side-effects. For example, the use of prednisone and corticosteroid drugs helps to give relief from flea bites, but at the same time, weakens the immune system. Similarly, chemicals containing poisons are often successful in killing fleas, but they are unsafe on pets in the long term. Keeping all these factors in mind, it is best to use home remedies to get rid of these annoying creatures.

Talcum powder has long been known as a natural remedy to treat dog fleas. Using baby powder for fleas is a simple process ... just cover your dog or cat with baby powder and this will smother the fleas. This remedy is often recommended for puppies or kittens that are too young to be treated with any flea chemical. A similar remedy uses baking soda. As before, start at the head so that the fleas will move towards the back of your pet and eventually off.

Researchers at the University of Florida have found that Avon's bath oil, Skin-So-Soft, is an excellent flea repellant. Soak your dog with a solution of 1 1/2 ounces of Skin-So-Soft to a gallon of water. In tests, flea counts dropped 40 percent in just one day.

Use a fine comb and go through your pet's hair - while you will not get rid of all fleas this way, you can combine it with other home remedies for fleas.

Did you know that in addition to flea collars that contain chemicals you can buy herbal flea collars? They use various scents to drive away fleas.

Vacuum the household entirely. Take special care on corners, cracks and the basement. Fleas thrive on hot and humid area the basement could be that. Corners and cracks may also be a place for flea to hide because their spiky body may keep them in the crack or corner.

Bathe your dog regularly. If possible, train your dog to bathe with his body submerged in the water. While bathing, the fleas may drown and you can easily comb them away.

If possible, use detergent to wash the body of your dog if you feel that there are flea eggs and larvae on your pet. Detergent will kill the egg and the larvae.

Still other flea and tick home remedies that you can use are such things as keeping your lawn mowed down close to the ground. Alcohol will kill fleas on contact and that is why so many flea sprays contain it. However; if you are going to use it, don't use rubbing alcohol, because it is poisonous and your pet can ingest it by licking themselves after you apply it. Everclear or vodka works best and it is perfectly safe to use on your pet.
