The Honda Accord is one of the most popular vehicles in the world today. In the United States, as many as 10 million units were sold as of 2009. It has been the lifeblood of most Americans for a better part of the past two decades. The first Accord, launched in 1976, was a step up from the previously launched Honda Civic and was a 3-Door hatchback, supported a 68hp, 1.6 liter engine and standard 5-speed manual transmission.

The second generation Accord hit the market in 1986, equipped with a broader wheelbase and an optional four speed automatic transmission. The vehicle also claimed to be fuel efficient, giving 29 miles/gallon within city limits and 40miles/gallon in the freeways.

The third generation Accord, manufactured between 1986 to1989, came in five distinct versions: the DX Hatchback, DX sedan, LX Sedan, LXi Hatchback and LXi Sedan. The wheelbase grew 5.9 inches to 102.4, as the length increased by 3.1 inches to 178.5. A larger 2.0-liter engine produced 98 hp on carbureted models, 110 horsepower on fuel injected models. The fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh generations of the vehicle underwent significant changes with the introduction of new vehicles. The seventh generation (2003-2007) consisted of a 2.4-liter i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine producing 166 hp, the 3.0-liter VTEC V-6 engine increasing to 244 horsepower, and the Accord Hybrid producing 253 horsepower.

Today's eighth generation Accords contains a 268-hp, 3.5-liter i-VTEC V-6 engine is available, featuring Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) for enhanced fuel efficiency. In short, the eighth-generation Accord is more powerful, refined and efficient than ever.

Honda Accord Performance Parts: Body Parts

A highly efficient exhaust system on a Honda Accord can really give a boost to the horsepower. People looking for a deep sound and increased power should opt for a performance system to increase the gas mileage by allowing the engine to breathe more freely. Be it the 2002 2.2ltr version or the 2006 4 cylinder version, a good exhaust system also provides adequate protection from rusting.

Air intake systems in an Accord improve the air flow into the engine by drawing cool air from outside the engine bay for more thrust. The systems are aerodynamically built, perfectly suited for the Accord sports variants.

The Accord clutch transfers torque from the engine through the transmission to the wheels. The engagement and disengagement of the clutch is what allows one to shift gears and control the acceleration. Single plate clutches were available till the fourth generation.
