How Does A Product Fulfillment Company Operate?

By: Fulfillment Services Home | Business | Sales

Fulfillment, which is commonly referred to as product fulfillment or order fulfillment is a process that includes complete packaging and shipping services. These services are designed to serve eCommerce businesses and other mail order outlets that typically operate using the internet or by telephone orders.

A product fulfillment company will usually allocate provisions to store goods,
process orders and complete shipping to the clients customers on time.
Storage of a companies inventory is part and parcel of the fulfillment service package. Goods are stored securely within the warehouses until an order is placed and the product is then shipped.

Goods that are to be stored under special requirements such has pre defined temperatures can also be catered for. Exclusive heat settings to keep products at both hot and cold temperatures is usually offered. A product fulfillment company will usually require a set fee for the storage of goods which
will be determined by these extra facilities being offered.

Keeping track of current stock levels is also part of the service. Once goods are shipped and new goods are arriving on the warehouse floor a detailed inventory is published and maintained throughout the day. The recording of levels of stock can usually be accessed remotely by the client and is presented in an easy to follow spreadsheet or something similar.

The selection of items for shipping is also another key part to the fulfillment service. Orders will come in via an internet link, a team of dedicated floor staff will then pick the ordered items and prepare them to be shipped. The item is then carefully packed away in protective packaging - all supplied by the product fulfillment company. A receipt is packaged with the goods and a printed
address will be firmly attached to the item.

Its uncommon for a fulfillment service to offer their own in house courier service, this is normally due to the sheer size and organization that is involved with these companies. Shipping will usually be outsourced to a large shipping firm. The advantage to this process is that product fulfillment company themselves are allocated huge discounts from the courier services due to the large amounts of work they pass on each and every day.

Common advantages to using a product fulfillment company include having adequate space to ensure new products that may not initially be selling well have space to be stocked and stored. Most product fulfillment companies will typically have thousands of square footage to accompany a
clients needs.

Another key advantage to using a fulfillment service is the massive discounts you receive that are passed on by the companies. Due to the sheer numbers involved with these companies they can offer their services at extremely competitive rates.
