I know many people believe health insurance is not really necessary and basically a luxury item, but I am very grateful for having an Aetna individual health insurance policy. Here is my story. I do not have a family history of cancer of any kind. However, when I reached age 35, I scheduled my first mammogram, as recommended by the American Medical Association, and as covered by my Aetna individual health insurance policy. I had no concerns or fears at all since breast cancer does not run in my family. However, I had often heard that receiving the preventive care covered by my Aetna individual health insurance policy was the wisest path. Also, I figured if I was paying for the Aetna individual health insurance policy monthly premiums, I might as well get my money’s worth and receive the care that I was entitled to. It isn’t just my Aetna individual health insurance policy that covers preventive care, but most health insurance plans provide benefits for standard screenings and preventive care. Often, these visits are not even subject to the deductible, and only require a minimal co-payment. After that first baseline mammogram, I waited until age forty to have a second mammogram, like the AMA recommends. After the third mammogram, my Aetna individual health insurance policy network primary care physician called me and asked me to get these tests run again within the next six months to monitor some spots for changes. The physician was not concerned at this time, and was very reassuring that this was just in order to be cautious. Again, my Aetna individual health insurance policy covered these screenings so I went ahead and did them. I have to admit that if I had not been enrolled in an Aetna individual health insurance policy and had to pay for these medical services out of pocket, I would not have done the baseline mammogram. Honestly, I may not even have done the annual recommended ones on a regular basis. When the spots came back as cancerous, my Aetna individual health insurance policy primary care physician again called me into her office to discuss the findings and results. My physician discussed the options with me, educated me about what the next round of tests and physical examinations would involve, and helped me understand the treatment options and prognosis. Early identification and diagnosis leads to early treatment, which leads to better results and prognosis. So, really, even though I got bad news, I got good news too. Having benefits for preventive care through my Aetna individual health insurance policy made what could have been a horrible life-threatening situation a manageable illness with a good chance of recovery. I have spent this past year receiving treatment for breast cancer and am feeling very healthy. My Aetna individual health insurance policy has covered all of the expenses, once I met the deductible and out of pocket maximum. Although it was difficult to come up with the money to meet the Aetna individual health insurance policy deductible and my co-insurance portion, I was very grateful that my preventive care benefits had made it easy to diagnose my breast cancer as early as possible, and that I was now going to receive the necessary medical care to speed up my recovery.
